5 Netflix films with one sided love that we wished could have a happy ending

As a hopeless romantic who has spent countless hours pouring over Bollywood movies and their heart-wrenching love stories, I can’t help but feel a pang of sorrow whenever I encounter one-sided love tales that never seem to find their happy ending. The characters in these films are often so perfectly matched, yet fate conspires against them in the most cruel ways possible.

Unfinished love tales can linger in our hearts with an unfulfilled longing, prompting us to speculate about possible changes that could’ve led to a joyous conclusion. Many times, Bollywood directors have presented us with these one-sided love narratives that remained unresolved.

Despite evoking a desire for a different outcome, these narratives maintain viewers’ engagement through their compelling storylines, convincing acting, and vibrant chemistry. On Netflix, stories such as Aman from Kal Ho Naa Ho and Ayan from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil unfold, delving into emotions like joy, sorrow, longing, and the feeling of being powerless in certain situations – exploring these complex human feelings.

Here are five films where the characters seemed perfect together but couldn’t be.

5 Netflix films with one-sided love that we wished could have a happy ending

1. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)

  • Runtime: 158 minutes
  • Cast: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anushka Sharma, Ranbir Kapoor
  • Director: Karan Johar
  • Release date: October 28, 2016

Scarce is the filmmaker who crafts tales of love triangles or unrequited love as skillfully as Karan Johar. He truly shone when he directed Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, a story centered around Ayan, who develops feelings for his friend Alizeh. Yet, the predictable twist unfolds as she opts for ‘just friendship’ and ties the knot with someone else instead.

In a way beyond what was anticipated, Ayan’s deep affection and sorrow shatters him. He attempts various things like stirring up feelings of envy in her or composing music from the raw emotions of his heartache. It’s hard not to wish that their bond could have transcended friendship.

3. Pad Man (2018)

  • Runtime: 140 minutes
  • Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor, Radhika Apte
  • Director: R. Balki
  • Release date: February 9, 2018

Sometimes, love may lead individuals to be smitten by someone who seems unattainable due to their romantic involvement with another person. In the film ‘Pad Man’, Pari finds herself drawn towards Lakshmikant, who is already married, and this situation echoes a similar sentiment.

In my role as a lifestyle expert, I’ve been deeply moved by Pari’s journey, as he strives to enhance menstrual hygiene for women, particularly his beloved wife Gayatri and many others. Although their story doesn’t end in joy, the tender and respectful moments they shared together leave us pondering about the possibilities had Pari’s emotions found their proper outlet.

3. Sukhee (2023)

  • Runtime: 127 minutes
  • Cast: Kusha Kapila, Shilpa Shetty, Amit Sadh
  • Director: Sonal Joshi
  • Release date: September 22, 2023

Often, unrequited love persists even when it’s not appropriate or seems distant from reality. This was the case for Sukhee as well, who transitioned from her homemaker role to embark on a personal exploration with long-time friends. Along this adventure, she encounters Vikram.

He was an unpopular guy in her school and is later introduced as attractive. Vikram seems to be the right partner for Sukhee, and their chemistry is felt through subtle moments between them. However, her marriage, kids, and family responsibilities stand in the way of a possible love story.

4. Haseen Dillruba (2021)

  • Runtime: 136 minutes
  • Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, Harshvardhan Rane
  • Director: Vinil Mathew
  • Release date: July 2, 2021

In many tales of unrequited love, the story often remains incompletely told due to societal perceptions of ethical impropriety, overshadowing personal emotions. Rani from Haseen Dillruba experienced this predicament herself as she became entangled in a love triangle with Neel while already married.

Despite having a deep physical bond, there’s no emotional attachment between them. His allure and novelty brought a refreshing change to her life, but his untrustworthiness weakens their potential for a joyful conclusion.

5. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)

  • Runtime: 187 minutes
  • Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan
  • Director: Nikkhil Advani
  • Release date: November 28, 2003

Without a doubt, the heartrending one-sided love story that left everyone in tears longing for a joyful conclusion was between Naina and Aman. He arrived like enchantment into her world, resolving her troubles, helping her acknowledge her emotions, and bringing back the happiness she had kept away from her life.

In a different way of saying it: He brings joy to her existence, and she finds herself falling for him deeply, reciprocating his feelings. However, their dream pairing doesn’t come true because he has a grave illness, which prevents him from returning her affection and leaves her to face life on her own. Heartbroken, he pushes her away, leading her to find love in her friend Rohit for a brighter future. This story highlights the power of unrequited love.

These movies illustrate how beautiful tales frequently have unfinished narratives, and not all ideal matches are destined to be pairs. The questions of what could have been and the possibility of a different outcome spark countless theories about reuniting our beloved characters. However, it also underscores the realization that life’s events can sometimes disrupt those who seem too perfect to exist together.
