5 Plot Points to Expect as Princess Irulan Returns in Dune 3

Actress Florence Pugh is set to reappear as Princess Irulan in “Dune: Part Three”. This third installment of director Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” series, scheduled for release in 2026, will continue the story of Paul Atreides, who must combat a plot that imperils his empire many years after he assumed control over the entire known universe in “Dune: Part Two”. Although Irulan had a minor role in the first two “Dune” films thus far, she is expected to take on a more significant part in “Dune: Part Three”.

In “Dune: Part Three,” the narrative will follow the tale penned by author Frank Herbert in his book “Dune: Messiah.” The character of Irulan, as seen in the third movie, has already given viewers a taste of what to anticipate. Given that “Dune: Part Two” deviated significantly from its source material in terms of ending, it’s likely there will be some adjustments to Irulan’s portrayal in the third film too. Despite these potential changes, Irulan is expected to play a substantial role in “Dune: Part Three,” embodying a character torn between loyalty and cunningness, serving as a formidable adversary.

5. Irulan Fails To Have A Child With Paul

Irulan Can’t Preserve House Corrino’s Royal Bloodline

In both the novel and film, Irulan marries Paul, which allows him to ascend the Golden Lion Throne upon her father’s life being spared. Yet, she does so under the belief that Paul would continue her family’s lineage by fathering a child with her. The Bene Gesserit also assign Irulan the mission of having a child with Paul in order to maintain the Atreides and Corrino bloodlines in ‘Dune Messiah’.

Because Paul was deeply drawn to Chani, his concubine in Dune Messiah, it prevented Irulan from bearing him a child. Even though Chani vanishes at the end of Dune: Part Two, Paul’s profound affection for her remains constant, implying that his bond with Irulan will not alter either.

4. Irulan Conspires To Overthrow Paul

3. Irulan Searches For Chani

Irulan May Seek Out Another Threat To Her Family’s Future

In the sequel of Dune, though Chani appeared to distance herself from Paul, they were once romantically involved earlier in the story, a fact that could result in Chani being pregnant with Paul’s offspring by the film’s end. Given Irulan’s ambition to preserve her family’s royal lineage as depicted in the novel, she might seek out Chani and any potential children she might have.

Even though Chani is no longer with Paul, if she bears children from Emperor Paul Atreides, it could potentially challenge the Corrino family’s claim to the Golden Lion Throne in the future novel “Dune Messiah”. Given that Chani attempted to harm Irulan due to her interference with Chani’s pregnancy, there is a possibility these characters might engage in a dramatic conflict on screen.

2. Irulan Defects From The Bene Gesserit

Irulan May Switch Sides In Dune: Part Three

In the story of Dune, Irulan is a part of both House Corrino and the Bene Gesserit. Throughout Dune: Part Two, it becomes clear that she is torn about whom she should be loyal to. After her father and the Harkonnens attacked House Atreides, she lost faith in him. Furthermore, she criticized Reverend Mother Mohiam for attempting to eliminate the Atreides bloodline. In Dune Messiah, Irulan collaborated with the Bene Gesserit to oust Paul, but later became disillusioned with their manipulations. The seeds of her betrayal were planted in Dune: Part Two, and it seems likely that future installments will show the full extent of this defection.

1. Irulan Will Help Raise Paul And Chani’s Children

Irulan Will Ensure House Atreides Lives On

In the novel “Dune Messiah,” Irulan, having deserted the Bene Gesserit, pledges allegiance to House Atreides due to her sorrow for Paul. As Paul relinquishes his Empire to his sister Alia and disappears into the desert, Irulan promises to assist in the upbringing of their children, Leto and Ghanima, acting as their educator. Despite her previous schemes against Paul’s family in the book, Alia spared her life, recognizing her trustworthiness. Given that it appears Irulan will oppose the Bene Gesserit in “Dune: Part Three,” it can be expected that she will remain faithful to caring for Paul and Chani’s offspring, which should facilitate the production of a fourth “Dune” movie.
