So, it would have been delightful for me to watch Yo Soy Betty, La Fea before diving into Betty La Fea: The Story Continues, but unfortunately, the original series isn’t streaming in the United States at the moment.
It seemed concerning to me that I might not appreciate “The Story Continues” if I hadn’t watched the initial series. To my surprise, I found myself greatly enjoying this new Amazon Prime Video program without feeling like I was missing out on a lot from the original.
This show could be enjoyed by others as well, regardless of their familiarity with the initial series, for this reason.

Betty La Fea: The Story Continues Makes Things Easy For New Viewers
20 years after the initial series, “Betty La Fea: The Sequel” unfolds with Betty (Ana Maria Orozco) and Armando (Jorge Enrique Abello), who are on the brink of divorcing. Their relationship becomes further strained due to their daughter Mila (Juanita Molina)’s estrangement from Betty. As they navigate through this, their fashion business, Ecomoda, encounters significant problems, one of which is failing to provide fair wages for its employees.
The narrative primarily revolves around the latest phase in the lives of Betty and Armando, encompassing their friends, relatives, and work associates. Pieces from their history play a role in shaping the present condition of their marriage, particularly Armando’s past behavior towards Betty, which was manipulative and self-serving for his business interests. Newcomers to the story soon discover that Armando had exploited and controlled Betty in the past.
The pain of that betrayal still haunts their relationship, even if they’ve had decades of happiness. Exes also seem to meddle in their lives. The show’s focus on these current issues makes it easy to jump into this story and want to know what happens next. Additionally, it uses clips from the original series strategically.
This clarifies events from the past more effectively. The program is clear in its explanations even without the videos, but they add depth to the details. I’m confident that fans of the show Betty la Fea will be thrilled by the inclusion of clips from crucial scenes.
It’s A Love Letter To Those Who Love Telenovelas
From the four years I’ve spent learning Spanish, I’ve developed more than just a basic comprehension of it. Yet, prior to that, I watched telenovelas without understanding the language. My motivation for doing so was having friends who are native Spanish speakers and were avid fans of these shows. Some of my favorites include “Rebelde,” “Clase 406,” and “Lola Érase Una Vez.” So while I’m not a telenovela expert, I do have a fair amount of experience with them.
Although The Story Continues isn’t a traditional telenovela due to its shorter length, it embodies many fundamental aspects. It employs classic telenovela themes, techniques, unexpected turns, and narrative decisions. Essentially, it functions as a telenovela in miniature form. Watching it made me yearn for the daily dose of something amusing, over-the-top dramatic, and absurd in all the right places that telenovelas offer.
Watching this, I found myself craving additional episodes to continue the storyline. It’s a series that really embodies the charm and brilliance of telenovelas, making it stand out among Prime Video’s offerings.

This show, “Betty La Fea, The Story Continues” (Season 1 Episode 5, “Your Prison”), evokes a sense of nostalgia for the original series and the early 2000s era. In particular, the song “Atrévete-Te-Te” by Calle 13 is played, which brings back memories of constant play on the radio during that time, reminding many viewers of the fantastic telenovelas from the early 2000s. As a devoted gamer, I’ve got to share some insights from my TV-watching days. You see, I used to be hooked on the series “Ugly Betty,” which had quite a few international adaptations – almost 30 in total! One of those versions was “Yo Soy Betty, La Fea.” Since I was a fan of the original, I already knew the gist of it. Plus, I’ve caught glimpses (and possibly full episodes) of another version called “La Fea Mas Bella” too.
If you share similar tastes with me, chances are you’ve watched “Ugly Betty,” even if only briefly. For those living beyond the U.S., your region might have its own adaptation that you’re familiar with. I found myself thoroughly enjoying each of the ten episodes, and I’m eagerly anticipating Season 2. Despite having only a little prior familiarity with the original series, I was captivated by its compelling narrative.
It’s a great Latinx TV series that more people need to check out.
