If someone had told me several years back that there would be not just one, but an entire series of Sonic films – and not only that, but these films would turn out to be well-received, with none other than Jim Carrey as a leading actor – I might have found it hard to believe, and possibly even reacted skeptically.
Indeed, as it turns out, every word I’ve spoken is accurate, and to this very moment, I maintain that the first one remains the finest video game movie ever made – yes, surpassing even the cherished _The Super Mario Bros. Movie_ in my esteem.
As a diehard fan, it goes without saying that discovering Shadow the Hedgehog in the closing credits of Sonic 2 filled me with excitement. Yet, what truly amps up my anticipation is the appearance of Amy Rose in the post-credits sequence for Sonic the Hedgehog 3! Here’s why this revelation has me buzzing:
1. It hints at potential interactions between these beloved characters.
2. It suggests that the storylines may intertwine, adding depth to the narrative.
3. It offers a tantalizing glimpse into future episodes or games featuring these characters together.
Firstly, My Daughter Has Wanted Amy To Be In The Sonic Movies Ever Since The First Film, And She Finally Got Her Wish
Initially, my child entered “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” with frustration. Upon inquiry about her grim expression, she explained, “I’m shocked that they introduced Shadow before Amy. It feels like they could just as easily bring Silver into the story next.
In Sonic 3, they didn’t include Silver, but I empathized with her frustration since the Sonic films up until the post-credits scene in the trilogy had primarily focused on characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow, giving an impression of being geared more towards boys.
It’s understandable that your daughter felt upset, as she has longed for Amy since the initial movie. Although I don’t believe Amy should have appeared in the first film because it primarily focused on introducing Sonic, I did think her inclusion would have been fitting for Sonic 2.
This affection stems from the fact that my daughter has always adored Amy, which began after she watched an excellent cartoon series called Sonic Boom. In this series, it’s evident that Amy harbors feelings for the lead character, a characteristic of her personality. However, Amy is more than just a love interest; she is a unique individual in her own right. In fact, throughout the show, she often served as the witty and logical counterpart to the other characters.
In this manner, I’m thrilled that my daughter’s long-held dream of Amy being in movies has finally come true. Moreover, when a line of boys around us grumbled upon seeing Amy, my daughter retaliated by sticking out her tongue and mumbling, “It’s about time,” under her breath. I wanted to encourage her to speak up more, but I decided to let her express her admiration for her favorite characters at her own pace. It’s only a matter of time before she does so, much like how Amy Rose became a fixture in these films over time.
Amy As A Badass Warrior Is The Right Way To Go
Previously, I’ve expressed my opinion that the first “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie stands out as the greatest video game adaptation in my view. However, there’s one aspect of the film that I feel could be improved – the action sequences. I believe they could have been executed more effectively.
Indeed, Sonic fit well within that game because it included his characteristic speed and agility. However, I yearned for a bit more depth, which is why I appreciated introducing Knuckles in the follow-up, given his reputation for toughness and combat skills.
In the sequel of Sonic 2, I found that it was decent, but craved more intense action. That’s why I was thrilled to discover Shadow in the subsequent game, who is famously associated with carrying a firearm in a comical manner. The action in Sonic 3 undeniably improved, resulting in pulse-racing sequences, particularly if you’re a fan of Sonic.
However, my true desire for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 lies in experiencing even more intense action. Watching Amy wreak havoc on countless Metal Sonics left me exclaiming “Wow, that’s awesome!” or something along those lines.
I’m thrilled about the concept of a strong and stylish Amy character taking the lead in Sonic 3’s sequel, saving Sonic when needed. While we have Krysten Ritter playing an authoritative role, it’s refreshing to see more gender diversity in the cool characters, considering the predominantly male focus in these films so far. I’m glad that Amy seems set to fill the action-packed role for the upcoming adventure.
Team Sonic Now Finally Feels Complete
One factor contributing to my disappointment (similar to my daughter’s) about receiving Shadow before Amy was because Amy seamlessly integrates with Team Sonic, whereas Shadow does not. It may seem unusual considering the abundance of additional characters in the Sonic universe, but when compiling my list of five classic Sonic characters I desired to see in Sonic 2, Amy made the cut, while Shadow did not.
Although Shadow certainly is an exciting addition to the Sonic universe, I don’t view him as a traditional or quintessential Sonic character. Introduced in Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow quickly became popular and I found myself enjoying his character then, just as I do now, especially with the Keanu Reeves references in the movie.
Speaking of which, when I reflect on the original Sonic games from my childhood, it’s hard not to think about characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Eggman, Amy Rose, and even Metal Sonic (if we’re getting a little mischievous).
It seemed unnatural and almost unfair that we didn’t see Amy for nearly three entire movies. As my daughter put it, it was as if they were replacing her with Silver or perhaps even Vector the Crocodile, if they weren’t going to have Amy in the film at all.
However, with Amy’s arrival, there seems to be a sense of alignment towards the correct path, especially because it addresses a void in the films that, in my opinion, has been conspicuously absent for far too long.
Amy Rose With Metal Sonic Brings In The Unused Sonic CD References That I’ve Been Waiting For
As my daughter eagerly anticipated Amy’s arrival, I found myself equally excited about finally witnessing some appreciation for Sonic CD. This fantastic game features Sonic traversing through different time periods, and it was where Amy Rose and Metal Sonic made their debut.
In the third film, having an entire army of Metal Sonics and Amy taking them down gave the sense of rightful retribution. This was particularly satisfying since Amy was often in a vulnerable position, or the damsel in distress, as seen in Sonic CD. However, she shows a different side of herself in the post-credits scene, where she’s the one dismantling them instead.
To be honest, although the original game is highly appreciated by true fans, I find it puzzling how the films seem to ignore its greatness entirely, considering the chronology of the video games.
In the second film, Knuckles made an appearance, but it’s important to note that he was introduced in the Sonic universe after Amy. Specifically, Knuckles first appeared in the game “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” from 1994, while Amy and Metal Sonic were initially featured in the 1993 game titled “Sonic CD”.
In this manner, I’m incredibly pleased that Sonic 4 seems to be acknowledging the legacy of Sonic CD by featuring both Amy and Metal Sonic. This leads me to my last point on why I’m thrilled about Amy joining the game now.
I Don’t Know How Amy Will Play Into This Next Movie, And That’s A Good Thing
As a movie buff, here’s my theory on what Sonic 4 might entail: I have this gut feeling about its plot, but there’s still some uncertainty. And guess what? I’m not alone in that – Amy seems to share the same sentiment! Let’s hope we’re both right when it comes out!
There are numerous possibilities for the upcoming installment. Could she potentially become a romantic interest for Sonic, or will their bond remain purely friendly? How will the rest of the team adapt to her presence? Will we encounter fewer human characters in the sequel, and instead focus more on characters similar to Amy in a fresh setting?
I’m not sure, but as I mentioned earlier, I have a strong suspicion about it. You notice how the post-credits scene in the movie seems to be referencing “Sonic CD”? Well, based on that reference and considering that Sonic CD is a time travel adventure video game, my guess is that the upcoming sequel will follow a similar theme. Maybe Sonic will journey through time with Amy, attempting to prevent Longclaw’s demise. However, Knuckles might warn him that altering the past isn’t possible.
As a captivated observer, I find myself intrigued by the prospect of Amy joining the narrative. The array of opportunities her presence brings is tantalizing, and I eagerly anticipate uncovering those mysteries in the next installment.
