As a long-time fan of superheroes and a proud dog parent myself, I can confidently say that Krypto is the perfect four-legged companion for Superman – both on and off the battlefield. Growing up with my own rambunctious pup, I can only imagine how delightful it would be to have a superpowered pooch by my side, just like Krypto.
What makes Krypto so special is not only his impressive superpowers but also his loving bond with Superman, which reminds me of the unbreakable connection between a pet and their owner. I was thrilled when I learned that James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” movie features Krypto as a central character, and even more so upon discovering that he modeled the dog after his own real-life furry friend, Ozu.
Now, I must admit, I laughed out loud when Gunn described Krypto as a “pretty terrible dog” in the film – after all, who hasn’t experienced the chaos and messiness of having a rambunctious pet at home? But I have no doubt that Krypto will steal the show in “Superman” just as he did in my heart. After all, every superhero needs their trusty sidekick, and for Superman, it’s clear that Krypto is more than just a dog – he’s family.
Throughout most of my life, I’ve been a diehard Batman fan, but the anticipation for the new Superman film is unlike any other I’ve felt – all thanks to one adored character: Krypto. The first trailer for this 2025 movie (releasing July 11) showcased Krypto, that lovable, red-caped canine, supporting the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) as they battled through snow, which filled my heart with warmth and left me longing for an earlier theater release.
Indeed, it sparked my curiosity to delve into a variety of superhero films, TV series, and DC comics where Superdog plays a significant role, either as the hero or an entertaining cameo. Fellow comic book enthusiasts and dog admirers like myself are now eagerly awaiting James Gunn’s Superman, thanks to these intriguing details I discovered about Krypto.
Krypto Has Some Stronger Abilities Than Superman
Krypto the Superdog first appeared in DC Comics in March 1955’s Adventure Comics #210, created by writer Otto Binder and illustrator Curt Swan. Initially introduced as a one-off character, he joined forces with young Clark Kent’s alter ego, Superboy, on an adventure. Due to favorable feedback, Krypto quickly returned in the very next issue and continued to appear regularly. Over time, he became an essential ally to the adult version of Superman during his global rescue missions. This information is based on Michael Eury’s 2006 book “The Krypton Companion.
As a movie critic, I must say that what truly captivates me about Krypto is his unique blend of abilities reminiscent of Superman, yet with distinct advantages that make him stand out. Just as an ordinary canine boasts a keener sense of smell and hearing compared to a human, Krypto surpasses the Man of Steel in these specific domains. This makes him exceptionally adept at sniffing out trouble from a distance – a talent that proves indispensable!
Krypto Is Very Protective Of Superman
It’s only natural and commendable that someone takes care of Superman, given how tirelessly he safeguards humanity. And that’s what makes Krypto so endearing – his timely assistance when Superman faces threats. The Superdog consistently prioritizes Superman’s welfare over his own in the comics, but some of the most impactful instances I encountered were from two standout DC animated movies.
2010’s “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse” introduces Clark Kent (Tim Daly) and Bruce Wayne (the talented voice actor Kevin Conroy), who bring Clark’s unknown cousin, Kara (Summer Glau), to the Fortress of Solitude. Upon arrival, the fortress’s dog gives her a wary growl. A similar event takes place in “Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons” from 2022, where the children of these superheroes, Jonathan Kent (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Damian Wayne (Jack Griffo), encounter Krypto for the first time when they break into the Fortress. They find that Krypto is fiercely protective as he guards it.
Krypto Is A Team Player
As a dog owner who sometimes finds it challenging to keep my dogs playing nicely with others, it’s delightful to observe a dog as cooperative as Krypto. Not only does he team up with Superman and the Justice League, but he also joins the Justice League and Titans. Moreover, he is part of two organizations dedicated to crimefighting among animals – the League of Super-Pets and the Space Canine Patrol Agents, which are composed mainly of alien creatures like himself.
Previously featured in the 2022 animated film “DC League of Super-Pets,” where Dwayne Johnson lent his voice to Krypto and Kevin Hart voiced Ace the Hound, the canine characters later joined forces with the Mystery Inc. gang in a movie from 2023, cleverly named “Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too!“. In this installment, the youthful detective group is summoned to aid when the Justice League mysteriously vanishes, leaving the city of Metropolis vulnerable as the League of Doom wreaks havoc.
Krypto Also Has His Enemies
As a dedicated movie critic, I’m always thrilled when characters get their chance to shine, and that’s exactly what DC Comics has done with Krypto. Known primarily for his supportive role alongside Superman, it’s refreshing to see him take on villains independently. His arch-nemesis, Destructo, adds an intriguing layer to the narrative as he is Lex Luthor’s pet dog, echoing Superman’s arch-nemesis. I can’t help but ponder if we might catch a glimpse of Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor sharing screen time with Krypto in the upcoming Superman.
Indeed, it’s fortunate that Krypto has expanded his roster of adversaries to include not just animals but also powerful metahumans like Atlas. In the 2008 comic “Superman: The Rising of Atlas,” written by James Robinson, he stands up against this villain for coming very close to annihilating Superman.
Above All, Krypto Is A Loving Pet Like Any Other
As a cinema enthusiast who’s got a soft spot for superheroes, let me tell you why Krypto takes the top spot for me: it’s not just his superpowers that charm me, but the heartwarming bond of companionship he shares with Superman, much like any devoted pet would with their owner. One standout portrayal of this is in his own animated series, “Krypto the Superdog,” where Sam Vincent brought him to life for two seasons on Cartoon Network.
The series portrays him as the powerful character familiar from the comics, yet it also reveals a bond between him and a human boy named Kevin Whitney (Alberto Ghisi), who gains partial ownership of him. This new interpretation by James Gunn’s Superman reminds me of a tender affection, as he eagerly approaches Clark and playfully licks his face in the trailer, much like a loving pet.
In addition, Gunn shared with IGN that the Superman movie’s Krypto is not exactly like the dog shown in the trailer, and he portrays as a “very naughty dog” in the film, inspired by his director’s real-life boisterous pet, Ozu. This should resonate with many dog owners, so I suspect I will enjoy his portrayal in the upcoming superhero film even more than initially expected.
