5 underdog movies on Netflix, Prime Video, Zee5 that exceeded audiences’ expectations: Haseen Dilruba to Sanam Teri Kasam

Out of all the movies that come out annually, there are just a few that may not initially seem appealing to viewers for various reasons. Yet, it’s only when these films hit the big screen or streaming platforms that audiences discover they aren’t cinematic gems and have been overlooked in the entertainment world.

5 movies on OTT that exceeded the expectations of the audience:

1. Haseen Dilruba

Where to watch: Netflix

The movie “Haseen Dillruba,” starring Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, and Harshvardhan Rane, premiered on Netflix. Although it didn’t gain much attention before its release, it gained popularity among film enthusiasts once it was streamed. The 2021 romantic thriller received immense love and as a result of public demand, a sequel titled “Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba” was released in August 2024.

2. Khufiya

Where to watch: Netflix

The 2023 film “Khufiya” is another underdog movie that has garnered praise for its acting, writing, and direction. Starring Tabu, Ali Fazal, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Azmeri Haque Badhon, this spy thriller is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. It’s adapted from Amar Bhushan’s novel “Escape To Nowhere” about espionage.

3. Dial 100

Where to watch: Zee5

Under the direction of Rensil D’Silva, the film titled Dial 100 falls into the genre of thriller drama. Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Neena Gupta and Sakshi Tanwar, this 2021 production loosely mirrors the Danish film The Guilty. The narrative revolves around a police officer who, overwhelmed by work, plays a crucial role in unraveling a complex case.

4. Kahaani

Where to watch: Prime Video

In the heart of 2012, I found myself captivated by a gripping thriller called “Kahaani.” Set against the vibrant backdrop of Kolkata during the Durga Puja festivities, this tale follows a determined pregnant woman on a relentless quest to find her vanished husband. Steering the narrative is none other than the talented Vidya Balan, ably supported by Parambrata Chatterjee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Indraneil Sengupta, and Saswata Chatterjee. This masterpiece was skillfully directed by Sujoy Ghosh.

5. Sanam Teri Kasam

Where to watch: Zee5

Sanam Teri Kasam is a deeply moving love tale that has the potential to stir emotions even in the most hardened souls. Initially released in 2016, this romantic drama starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane in their first Hindi film roles didn’t make a significant impact. However, upon its re-release in February, 2025, Sanam Teri Kasam became one of the highest-grossing re-released Indian films.
