In a household, older siblings often serve as role models and guides for their younger ones. They can function as mentors and companions. Growing up, many of us have enjoyed movies that portray sibling relationships such as Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Josh, Agneepath, Dil Dhadakne Do, among others. These films sometimes introduce characters who resonate with us deeply, giving off an older brother vibe as we watch them on screen. If you appreciate the bond between siblings, here are some Netflix movies that make you wish these characters were your big brothers.
Let’s not forget Vasan Bala’s directorial, Jigra in which Alia Bhatt plays an elder sister of Vedang Raina. Alia as Satya Anand is protecting Vedang’s character Ankur in the upcoming film. Before her, Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and other actors have made us admire the supportive nature of their respective characters for close ones.

1. Jehangir Khan from Dear Zindagi
If you’ve seen the movie “Dear Zindagi,” you’re familiar with what we’re discussing. In this film, Shah Rukh Khan portrayed Dr. Jehangir Khan, a role directed by Gauri Shinde. Having SRK’s character, Jehangir, as our wise older brother would certainly make life easier for us.
He would listen to our relationship or career problems and offer meaningful advice when needed. Jehangir as our elder brother would simplify complex situations for us. In a scene, Jug made Alia Bhatt’s character Kaira understand how we should look for options before deciding to settle down with one partner. Remember the ‘kursi’ example?
2. Major Ram Prasad Sharma from Main Hoon Na
In Farah Khan’s 2007 film “Main Hoon Na,” Shah Rukh Khan portrayed the character of Major Ram Prasad Sharma, an elder half-brother figure to Laxman Prasad Sharma (Zayed Khan). If Major Ram were our real-life big brother, he would be a source of great support for us. In challenging circumstances, he would shield us with his courageous and valiant persona.
Major Ram wasn’t only serious; he had a playful side too. He would sprinkle his charisma among us and join in the fun. Even though he might seem traditional at times, we could occasionally encourage him to experiment with trendy clothing styles as well.
3. Rahim Lala from Gangubai Kathiawadi
In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia Bhatt portrayed a powerful character named Gangubai. In this movie, Alia’s character sought help from the mafia leader, Rahim Lala, after she was attacked by a local thug at her brothel. You may recall the scene where Ajay Devgn as Rahim Lala mercilessly punishes the thug when he returns to the brothel later on?
If Rahim Lala was our elder brother, he would be a protective sibling and show his care towards us.
4. Ranvijay Singh from Animal
2023 saw filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga introducing the complex alpha male character, Ranvijay Singh, in his movie “Animal.” Although Ranvijay’s actions often embodied harmful masculinity and misogyny, it is crucial to highlight that he consistently demonstrated deep affection for his sisters. Despite being a character surrounded by controversy, Ranbir Kapoor portrayed Ranvijay with unwavering loyalty towards his beloved sisters.
In this sequence, after Reet feels threatened by bullies at her college, her brother Ranbir (Ranvijay) storms into the classroom. He queries the students, “Who harassed my sister?” Although we don’t condone his violent actions, there’s no denying that Ranvijay’s fiery demeanor and strong protective instincts towards his sibling are unmistakable.
5. Monty from Life in a…Metro
In a reimagined context, if Monty, the character played by the late actor Irrfan Khan in Anurag Basu’s Life in a…Metro, was our elder brother, he would have been an ideal blend of fun and inspiration. Monty’s humor would have brought joy to our days, and his vibrant outlook on life would have motivated us to seize each moment without being weighed down by troubles.
In this particular setting, Irrfan’s character, Monty, helped Konkona Sen Sharma’s character, Shruti Ghosh, find comfort on the rooftop of a building. Monty suggested that Shruti release her anger by yelling out loud from up high. He expressed, “Anger should not be kept inside. It needs to be let out.” Indeed, it would be wonderful to have a sibling who encourages us like him.

Having someone like Gauri Bhaiya as our mentor would inspire us to pursue our dreams. His advice would prove invaluable throughout our lives.
