7 years of Bareilly Ki Barfi: When Rajkummar Rao credited Kriti Sanon, Ayushmann Khuranna starrer for changing his ‘serious guy’ tag

As a dedicated follower of Rajkummar Rao’s career, it is truly fascinating to witness his transformation from a “serious guy” to a versatile actor who can effortlessly switch between drama and comedy. His journey, much like the character Pritam Vidrohi in Bareilly Ki Barfi, has been filled with unexpected twists and turns, each one revealing a new facet of his talent.

Actor Rajkummar Rao is currently enjoying the success of his new movie, Stree 2, which he made with Shraddha Kapoor. As we look back on Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s Bareilly Ki Barfi, which celebrated its 7th anniversary this year, let’s remember a past statement by Rajkummar, where he acknowledged that the film helped shift his reputation from being a ‘serious’ actor.

Seven years ago, the film “Bareilly Ki Barfi,” featuring Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Kriti Sanon, hit the screens. Since then, the actor known for his role in Stree 2 has been involved in numerous comedic films. In 2022, during the trailer launch of his dark comedy thriller “Monica, O My Darling,” he acknowledged that “Bareilly Ki Barfi” was instrumental in transforming his on-screen persona from a “serious actor” into someone who could elicit laughter from audiences through comedy.

He said, “I got the tag of a serious guy because I was doing some serious films. But Bareilly Ki Barfi changed that for me. I didn’t even realize while doing the film that it is going to be such a revelation for the audience. I was doing it with utmost sincerity. I was doing it as a comedy. I was just reacting as my character would. I realized after Bareilly Ki Barfi that I enjoy doing comedies.”

Additionally, he remembered that Raj Nidimoru too found humor in his acts. While the movie director visited Rao’s home to share the tale of Stree, the performer inquired as to why he was considered suitable for the part.

Raj divulged that the director thought his performances contained humor. According to Nidimoru, there were specific instances in Shahid that he found amusing. “I believe your delivery is quite special and unique,” he said, “so I think you’re the ideal candidate for this film.”

The movie “Bareilly Ki Barfi” follows the story of Bitti, a girl who embodies freedom and tomboyishness. Her life experiences a significant shift after yet another unsuccessful attempt at an arranged marriage prompts her to flee from home. Along her journey, she encounters Pritam Vidrohi, portrayed by Rajkummar Rao, whom she believes will accept her for who she truly is. This film garnered both commercial and critical acclaim.
