9-1-1: Lone Star EP Admits Grace Leaving Judd Is 'Tough To Swallow' And 'Hard To Buy,' So What's Next Without Sierra McClain?

As a long-time fan of 9-1-1: Lone Star, I must say that the Season 5 premiere was a rollercoaster of emotions. The departure of Grace (played by Sierra McClain) was expected but still left me feeling a bit empty in my living room couch. However, I am relieved that the writers didn’t resort to killing her off, as it would have been an easy way out and disrespectful to the character and the audience.

Spoilers ahead for the Season 5 premiere of 9-1-1: Lone Star, called “Both Sides, Now.”

Lone Star,” as scheduled in 2024, has been broadcasted. Although there were unexpected events and hints dropped for Tarlos’ struggles, fans already anticipated one thing: Judd without Grace. This was because actress Sierra McClain’s departure from the show was announced prior to Season 5, leaving viewers wondering how they would write off a character so committed to her family, work, and faith without killing her. The episode titled “Both Sides, Now” offered an answer, and co-showrunner/EP Rashad Raisani discussed this candidly with TopMob.

As depicted in the Season 5 premiere, Grace experienced a compelling urge to participate in a mercy mission aimed at assisting underprivileged children. This compulsion was so intense that she chose to part ways with Judd and Charlie in Austin to follow it. Judd expressed his admiration for Grace’s altruism, but it was evident that the ex-firefighter was grappling with feelings of loneliness and aimlessness in his now quieter home. The leap of a year in time effectively conveyed the sudden absence of Grace from the end of one season to the start of the next. (You can stream Season 4 with a Hulu subscription.)

In our chat prior to the premiere of 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5, I inquired from co-showrunner Rashad Raisani about the reason behind Grace’s absence from her life in Austin, friends, and family. He explained:

Absolutely, given the strong connection between Grace and the characters, it’s difficult to accept the notion that she might depart from them. In our discussions about handling this situation, a hasty thought that was quickly dismissed was the idea of an off-screen demise for Grace. While many shows have resorted to such methods when actor issues arise, we felt it would be unfair to our audience and ourselves, as we deeply care for Grace. We never truly contemplated such a move. Additionally, we could never fathom Grace abandoning Judd or her child, among other things.

Eliminating Grace from “Lone Star” during the break could have been a simple solution for writing off Sierra McClain, but it’s clear that many fans, including myself, are glad the producers didn’t opt for the straightforward choice. However, the challenge was to devise a reason why the dedicated mother, wife, and dispatcher would no longer be around. The Executive Producer stated:

During our discussions, I found myself conversing extensively with Jim Parrack as we grappled with this complex issue. The resolution to this question held immense significance for him, more so than anyone else, as it would dictate the emotion he portrayed in every scene of the current season. Together, we pondered, ‘In fact, the only motivation greater than her devotion to family, Charlie, and work is her faith and belief in God.’ We concluded that this was the sole factor that could potentially drive her to take such a drastic step and leave, thus becoming our primary focus because it seemed plausible enough for us to rest easy knowing we might be on the right track.

Luckily, Grace’s strong faith in the early seasons of “9-1-1: Lone Star” allowed for an explanation of her absence without undermining her character or her bond with her family. It appears that Jim Parrack, who has portrayed Judd since the show’s debut on “Lone Star”, played a crucial role in determining the details of a significant storyline for his character.

Throughout Season 5’s premiere, Judd appeared extremely supportive of his wife’s decision. However, it remains to be seen if his feelings about her absence will shift as he grapples with responsibilities during the season, potentially leading to a change in his emotional state. I posed this question to Rashad Raisani, and the executive producer responded:

In simpler terms, Judd is struggling with complex emotions because he adores his wife so deeply that he denies to himself the possibility of feelings like abandonment, anger, frustration, or sadness. These feelings build up over time and become noticeable as early as Episode 4, subtly expressed in various scenes.

To put it simply, although Judd might come across as an incredibly loving husband on television, there are still limits to what he can handle. These deeper emotions might not be immediately obvious, but as the season progresses, Raisani hints that they will become more apparent.

As a devoted viewer, I can tell you that while our protagonist prefers to keep things understated for some episodes, there’s a storm brewing. He’ll be forced to confront the deep pain this situation has caused him, leading to actions he won’t be proud of and pushing him into his most critical point since the tragic events in the pilot when his team perished. Without a doubt, this hidden turmoil is about to erupt dramatically in future episodes.

It seems quite unlikely that things will turn out beautifully when this season unfolds, but I’m eager to witness Jim Parrack’s acting in whatever unfolds. Rashad Raisani has revealed one plotline that has been altered due to Sierra McClain’s absence: the story of how Wyatt transitioned into a 9-1-1 operator. He stated:

Initially, we intended for five to six episodes this season to depict Grace tutoring him, serving as his mentor while he was her protege. However, since Grace is leaving the show, we took advantage of a time leap and implied that she trained him during that period off-screen. This allowed us to place him in the main role earlier than planned, effectively speeding up the process.

As a gamer, I can’t wait to see how Judd navigates life without his wife in Austin, as new episodes of “9-1-1: Lone Star” unfold every Monday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. With the freshman series “Rescue: HI-Surf” airing before it, it’s going to be quite a ride! Although he’d love to return to his post as Owen’s lieutenant, it seems that isn’t an option for him. So, will he end up driving trucks for the remainder of this season? We’ll have to tune in and see! I’m definitely keeping my eyes on this gripping storyline.
