Caution: Significant plot revelations lie ahead for the final episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star, airing on Fox titled “Homecoming”. To watch it, you’ll need a subscription to Hulu.
The time has come for a new chapter as the team from Fox’s series, 9-1-1: Lone Star, based at Station 126, handled their final call according to the 2025 TV lineup. The climax of the fifth and last season was filled with high tension, featuring an asteroid threatening Austin, a possible nuclear disaster, several severely injured firefighters, and Tommy seeming close to death in “Homecoming.” I must say, the writers of Lone Star did an impressive job crafting a mostly joyous resolution for all characters… although it was somewhat bittersweet.
In retrospect, there was a moment in the series finale that I feel could have been handled differently, despite its successful conclusion. It’s on me for getting carried away with expectations. What I truly yearned for was a final appearance by Sierra McClain as Grace.
9-1-1: Lone Star Comes Full Circle
It appeared as though the climactic showdown in Lone Star was orchestrated in such a way that someone’s life was inevitably at stake, and there were no shortages of potential casualties. In the heat of the moment, Owen, Judd, Marjan, Paul, and Mateo each bore the scars of their valiant attempts to deactivate the nuclear reactor. Meanwhile, Tommy‘s life hung by a thread as Nancy and T.K. struggled to provide her the necessary aid with limited resources at hand.
In my opinion, among the two characters, Tommy appeared to be one of those most likely to meet their end, particularly following Gina Torres’ decision against pursuing the breast cancer storyline. Similarly, Owen seemed destined not to last much longer once he began stumbling towards the crucial, world-saving button. The episode “Homecoming” went above and beyond in convincing us of his demise. Frankly, I wouldn’t have minded if it had ended that way, as it would have given Owen a heroic farewell. However, his actual ending turned out to be much more heartwarming instead.
In the end, there were no fatalities! Instead, it seemed everyone was blessed with a joyous outcome. T.K. and Carlos gained custody of Jonah, with T.K. deciding to leave his EMT job behind to focus on being a stay-at-home father to his son/brother. Tommy experienced an almost miraculous remission, Marjan is expecting a child now that Joe has returned to the series, Mateo managed to avoid deportation by successfully arguing his case with Nancy’s support, and Judd was promoted to the new 126 captain after starting out as a probie in Lone Star – quite a twist in their big attempt at a deceptive storyline.
Contrary to what might have been assumed, Owen did not succumb to his injuries. Instead, he seized the opportunity to move to New York City and assume the role of Fire Chief, a position he had long coveted during the final season. After weathering the years in Austin and recovering from his ordeal, he returned to his beloved city. A joyful conclusion for all!
Well, sort of.

Where Was Grace?
In the latter part of Season 5, Judd faced significant challenges with alcoholism. Yet, considering his journey as a firefighter, I can’t think of a more fitting conclusion for his character than to be promoted to captain of the 126. As a husband and father, it would have been heartwarming to see Sierra McClain (Grace) make one final appearance, even if it was just a brief Zoom call during Judd’s promotion ceremony to greet their charming son Charlie. This would have made the finale more uplifting.
It was my mistake for being disappointed when I didn’t see her, as co-showrunner Rashad Raisani had informed TVLine back in November 2024 that she wouldn’t appear at all, not even for a cameo. He also shared with TopMob his plans to address Grace’s difficult choice to leave Judd and Charlie, implying that McClain’s surprise visit wasn’t likely to happen. I should have remembered this information.
Indeed, I found myself deeply attached to Judd and Grace’s relationship, secretly hoping for a reappearance of her character on screen. Fortunately, their storyline didn’t conclude with them breaking up. Instead, they remain married, maintaining the same depth of love as before. Regrettably, we missed out on one final scene together.
Was Grace’s absence detrimental to my enjoyment of the finale? By no means, in fact, it has sparked my interest to revisit the pilot and relive the entire journey of the characters from their humble beginnings until now. The complete series will be accessible for streaming on Hulu once the finale is incorporated into their library.
9-1-1 won’t completely disappear from primetime during this gap, but the midseason return of Season 7, airing on ABC, isn’t until late February. Specifically, it starts on March 6.
