Never before has the horror genre been more flourishing than it is now, with an abundance of original and varied terrifying films hitting the screens each year. With anticipation building to a fever pitch, audiences eagerly await the blockbuster season this summer. Ranging from established franchise productions to independent films, the summer of 2025 promises to be a celebration of the horror genre like never before.
As a horror enthusiast, I’m thrilled to see that despite many sequels and reboots gracing our screens, there’s an abundance of fresh, original horror stories waiting to captivate us. Even some beloved horror franchises are gearing up for their comeback this summer with a completely new film.
Final Destination Bloodlines (May 16, 2025)
The “Final Destination” series is primarily valued for its distinctive and chilling concept. In each film, there are five in total so far, the protagonists have somehow cheated death after learning about an impending disaster. To rectify these errors, Death, portrayed by the late and legendary Tony Todd, arranges each death that was supposed to occur through gruesome, unexpected accidents. The “Final Destination” films remain a significant part of 2000s horror and continue to resonate with viewers since their debut due to their ingeniously gory deaths.
15 years since its last installment, the renowned tale appears to repeat itself in a new chapter, but this time, the repercussions of cheating death seem to extend through generations. Early viewers of the film have been raving that Bloodlines is the best addition to the series yet, and many also commend the acting prowess displayed by the actor in what may be his swan song performance. The revival of the Final Destination franchise seems impressive with this latest installment, Final Destination: Bloodlines.
Fear Street: Prom Queen (May 23, 2025)
Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy aimed to bring to life R.L. Stine’s second most popular horror series, following Goosebumps. To pique viewer curiosity, Netflix released the movies of the trilogy successively in mid-2021, one per week. Each film explored tales of horror from various eras, with influences from ’90s classics like Scream and ’70s favorites such as Friday the 13th. The trilogy now aims to weave a fresh narrative.
In 1992, a novel titled “Prom Queen” was written, and this story is being brought to life on screen. The plot revolves around an enigmatic masked murderer who targets the popular potential prom queens of Shadyside High before the Prom Night, forcing the students to act swiftly to prevent further deaths. The trailer indicates a powerful ’80s vibe, a style Netflix has embraced with series like “Stranger Things”. Fans of the original trilogy eagerly await the release of “Fear Street: Prom Queen”.
Bring Her Back (May 30, 2025)
The Philippou brothers, famously recognized as the ones behind RackaRacka on YouTube, are set to unveil their latest original horror production in 2025, titled “Bring Her Back”. Having built a strong reputation over time with their work in cinematic entertainment, “Talk to Me” marked their significant entry into the horror genre, which was met with considerable success. This achievement has set the stage for their upcoming project.
The upcoming film “Bring Her Back” appears to be a chilling, thought-provoking, supernatural horror production rather than the more playful approach of their first movie, “Talk to Me“. In this new story, a brother and sister find themselves adopted by a mysterious foster mother who introduces them to an unimaginable ritual that will mark their lives indelibly. With expectations running high for what could be their most petrifying production yet, moviegoers are eagerly anticipating the terrors that the Philippou brothers have prepared in “Bring Her Back“.
28 Years Later (June 20, 2025)
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that we’re getting a long-awaited sequel to “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later,” movies that have left an indelible mark on horror cinema. It’s been about twenty-three years since the last film hit the screens, but the original director, Danny Boyle, and writer Alex Garland are back at the helm for this exciting return. “28 Days Later” was a groundbreaking horror masterpiece that continues to shape the zombie genre even today. This new installment takes place almost three decades after the initial outbreak, revealing a world still grappling with the devastating effects of the Rage virus.
This upcoming film features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell from “Sinners,” Edvin Ryding previously seen in “Young Royals,” and others. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original movie, is planning to reprise his role, both as a producer and potentially on-screen. It seems this film could kickstart a new trilogy of zombie horror movies for the series. The title, “28 Years Later,” hints that it may breathe life back into the undead zombie franchise.
M3GAN 2.0 (June 27, 2025)
M3GAN, which premiered in January 2022, was one of the most successful films of its year. This robot horror movie introduced us to M3GAN, an exceptionally lifelike android designed as a child’s perfect companion. The first recipient of this advanced technology is Cady, the niece of toy inventor Gemma, portrayed by Allison Williams. Since Cady’s parents tragically perish in an accident, Gemma now takes care of her. As a symbolic representation of social media and technology overshadowing adolescence and potentially replacing parents, M3GAN gradually transforms into the menacing robot that audiences adore.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about the impending release of M3GAN 2.0. The original film, with its outlandish yet endearing concept, took the world by storm, and it seems that the sequel is capitalizing on this momentum. In true Terminator 2: Judgment Day fashion, I’m eagerly anticipating the return of a protagonist squaring off against another rogue android. With fresh abilities, new wardrobe, and an enticing dance move, M3GAN 2.0 appears poised to become one of the summer’s most chilling horror blockbusters.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (July 18, 2025)
One of the most memorable films following Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, gained its iconic status primarily because of its intriguing and thrilling initial movie. However, the subsequent two sequels failed to live up to the original’s standard. Featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and others in the cast, the first film centered around a group of teens who accidentally killed someone during a hit-and-run over the summer. As autumn began and school started, one of the teens was stalked by a murderer disguised as a fisherman, seeking revenge for the crime they had committed the previous summer, knowing full well what they did.
Under the same title, a new installment is slated for release in mid-July 2025. However, this premise raises two concerns. Firstly, the movie appears to lack originality when compared to the popular horror franchise Scream, known for its slasher killing teens in a murder mystery setting. Secondly, this reboot doesn’t seem to offer anything fresh to the series, as it appears to follow yet another group of teens involved in a hit-and-run incident, attempting to evade consequences. Despite these reservations, many horror enthusiasts are keeping their fingers crossed for the revamped version of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Together (August 1, 2025)
As a cinephile, I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of “Together,” directed by the talented Michael Shanks. Though details about the plot are scarce at the moment, the buzz among critics is already deafening, which only heightens my anticipation. The story follows a couple who, upon moving to the countryside, start experiencing eerie and supernatural events that will ultimately forge an unbreakable bond between them. Given its classification as a body-horror film, a genre that’s been captivating audiences with titles like “The Substance” and “The Ugly Stepsister,” I can hardly wait to see what “Together” has in store!
The movie features real-life duo Dave Franco and Alison Brie, each renowned in their respective entertainment fields. They have previously worked together on projects such as “The Little Hours,” “Somebody I Used To Know,” “The Disaster Artist,” and “The Rental.” However, it appears that “Together” might be their most highly anticipated collaboration to date, with viewers eager to witness the chilling and terrifying narrative suggested by this film.
Weapons (August 8, 2025)
In 2022, Zach Cregger stunned the horror genre with his remarkable and awe-inspiring movie titled Barbarian. This film has been brimming with suspenseful plotlines and chilling scares that have left viewers spellbound since its premiere, and Cregger is eager to repeat this success. Featuring Julia Garner, Brian Tyree Henry, Josh Brolin, and other well-known actors, the upcoming film revolves around the investigation into the vanishing of an entire classroom within a single night. As speculation swirls, the town’s residents are on a mission to uncover the truth behind the mysterious event.
Viewers can already feel the chilling and unsettling ambiance that this film aims to create. The title doesn’t make much sense initially, leaving fans curious about the fate of the children in the classroom. Zach Cregger’s latest thriller, Weapons, appears set to be one of the most original and terrifying horror films of 2025.
The Toxic Avenger (August 29, 2025)
Many viewers may not realize that one iconic figure from the ’80s horror genre also has elements of a superhero. Born from Troma Entertainment in 1984, a production company recognized for its fast and budget-friendly movie-making methods, The Toxic Avenger stands out as their most successful film and character to date. Fans were captivated by the grotesque and grisly appearance of this monster, and they enjoyed watching him defeat wrongdoers using his mop and toxic waste materials. By 2025, he was back with a fierce determination.
In a fresh take on the initial tale, director Macon Blair is aiming to resurrect the character Toxie for mainstream viewing. With Peter Dinklage portraying the main character, Toxie transforms into a mutant superhero who battles unsavory criminals and enforces justice in gruesome and revolting manners. The film premiered at film festivals in 2023 to great acclaim but has since gone unmentioned. Audiences have been eagerly waiting for this movie. Previously deemed unfit for release due to excessive violence and mutant nudity, fans can now relax knowing that The Toxic Avenger will be shown in cinemas starting from August.
