In the latest installment of “The Last of Us” season 2, episode 4, we see a series of nine significant shifts from the original game, “The Last of Us Part II”. Unlike the first season which remained remarkably true to its source, this new adaptation has taken a different route, making considerable alterations to the storyline of “The Last of Us Part II”. While the first season mainly added to the narrative rather than modifying it, the second season is noticeably deviating from the original content.
As a devoted fan, I can’t wait to continue the thrilling journey in The Last of Us season 2, episode 4! Picking up right where we left off in episode 3, Ellie and Dina finally arrive in Seattle. In this new chapter, they navigate through the city and stumble upon a WLF base nestled within a satellite TV station. Upon their arrival, they bear witness to the gruesome remnants of a Seraphite massacre. This grim discovery sets off a chain of events as WLF forces pursue them relentlessly, eventually leading to an encounter with an infected horde that forces our heroes to flee. Eventually, they find refuge in an abandoned theater, only to realize they’ve strayed far from their intended course.
9. Ellie & Dina Are Hunting Tommy In The Game
Rather Than Just Hunting Abby
In a departure from the original game, “The Last of Us” season 2 episode 4 alters the narrative by having Ellie and Dina in Seattle for reasons other than initially searching for Tommy. Instead, it is Abby who is pursued first by Tommy, and Maria sends Ellie and Dina to locate him. However, they opt to seek retribution against Abby during their search. This shift in motivation means that Ellie and Dina’s quest in the game is driven by discovering clues about Tommy’s whereabouts through various sources such as radio broadcasts, letters, and even fragments of his interrogations.
Contrary to some assumptions, the scenarios depicted in the HBO show don’t align with The Last of Us season 2. Specifically, as we see in episode 4, Tommy remains in Jackson rather than being sent there. Ellie and Dina, not compelled by Tommy’s whereabouts, decide to go there independently for the purpose of confronting Abby. Their actions are driven more by leads about the location of the WLF, as opposed to Tommy’s whereabouts.
8. The HBO Show Cut A Lot Of Ellie & Dina’s First Day In Seattle
Since They Aren’t Looking For Tommy
In the video game “The Last of Us Part II,” Ellie’s adventure in Seattle spans over three days, with each day encompassing multiple hours of gameplay. Notably, the entirety of Ellie’s first day is featured within episode 4 of the game. Compared to the HBO series, a significant portion of Ellie’s initial day from “The Last of Us Part II” was omitted in the show, creating a more streamlined narrative. In the TV adaptation, Ellie and Dina quickly head towards the satellite station, while in the game, this destination marks the conclusion of their first day’s journey.
Initially, Ellie and Dina visit a hotel functioning as a WLF stronghold in the game. Upon arrival, they notice an electric barrier blocking entry, prompting them to seek out a synagogue where they secure fuel for the gate’s power source. After battling Infected in a parking garage, they return to the hotel and uncover evidence of Tommy’s interrogation of Nick. The pair is subsequently apprehended by WLF soldiers and imprisoned in a school. Later, they take refuge in an apartment complex. Inside, they stumble upon a message indicating that one of Abby’s associates is stationed at the TV station, leading them to ultimately head there.
7. Shimmer Dies In The Last Of Us Part II
When Ellie & Dina Are Kidnapped By WLF Soldiers
In the fourth episode of The Last of Us season 2, Ellie and Dina temporarily leave their horse, named Shimmer, in a deserted building, planning to return for her later. However, Shimmer’s story takes a tragic turn in the series. Prior to being captured by WLF soldiers, Ellie and Dina encounter a land mine while riding Shimmer, injuring her. A WLF leader named Mike subsequently shoots Shimmer, which results in her death. Remarkably, The Last of Us season 2 has managed to avoid any horse deaths up until this point.
6. Ellie’s Immunity Is Revealed When She Breathes Spores In The Game
But Spores Don’t Exist In The HBO Show
In HBO’s The Last of Us, Ellie has experienced more bites than in the original games, and this pattern persists in episode 4. In this particular episode, when a Infected attacks, Ellie extends her arm to protect Dina, getting bitten in the process. This incident is significant because it demonstrates Ellie’s immunity to the infection, which she eventually reveals to Dina. Interestingly, in The Last of Us Part II game, Ellie’s mask breaks after a fall during the subway station escape sequence, exposing her to spores that don’t exist in HBO’s version of The Last of Us. Consequently, the show had to alter the way this immunity reveal unfolds in the series.
5. Dina’s Sickness Originally Forces Her To Reveal Her Pregnancy
But She Doesn’t Get Sick In The HBO Show
In the fourth episode of season 2 from ‘The Last of Us’, Dina’s disclosure regarding her pregnancy unfolds differently than in the original. On HBO, it is Dina who shares her pregnancy news following discussions about Ellie’s immunity. This revelation is portrayed as a comforting moment, suggesting that Dina might be sharing this secret to help Ellie accept and feel better about her own immunity secret.
In a different scenario in The Last of Us Part II game, Dina falls ill during their escape through the subway. It’s up to Ellie to save her, and they both seek shelter in a theater. In this safe haven, Ellie insists on knowing what’s happening, so Dina shares the news – she is pregnant. She explains that this is why she has been feeling unwell and fatigued.
4. Ellie Is Much Angrier About Dina’s Pregnancy In The Game
But She Is Overjoyed In The HBO Series
Following the revelation of Dina’s pregnancy in HBO’s The Last of Us, Ellie exhibits a markedly different response compared to the game. In episode 4, Ellie expresses immense joy about Dina’s pregnancy. Despite her concerns for Dina, she openly declares his excitement at becoming a father. Their subsequent intimate moment underscores Ellie’s happiness regarding the pregnancy. Conversely, in the game, Ellie is significantly less enthusiastic. Upon learning of Dina’s pregnancy, Ellie voices frustration, viewing it as a burden. She is upset that Dina didn’t share her suspicions before leaving Jackson.
3. Ellie Plays Guitar Before Getting To The Theater (& The Song Is Different)
She Doesn’t Play Pearl Jam This Time
The scene of Ellie playing the guitar is enjoyable in both HBO’s The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II, but it unfolds differently in each instance. In season 2, episode 4, Ellie and Dina explore a music store early on, where Ellie discovers the guitar. However, in The Last of Us Part II, Ellie’s guitar scene transpires at the theater, following her discovery about Dina’s pregnancy. Also, Ellie sings Pearl Jam’s “Future Days” in the game, whereas in the show she performs Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” possibly because the HBO series’ outbreak occurred in 2003, a decade before “Future Days” was released.
2. Ellie & Dina Have A Different Destination In The Game
Lakehill Appears Earlier In The Show
In episode 4 of The Last of Us season 2, Ellie and Dina learn about the whereabouts of the WLF from a radio broadcast while on the roof of a theater. They find themselves in a location called Lakehill, which isn’t introduced until later in The Last of Us Part II. In the game, it is Hillcrest that is mentioned instead, with the radio discussing an intruder being there. Thinking that the intruder might be Tommy, Ellie sets off for Hillcrest. It’s only when she returns to the theater that Dina brings up Lakehill as the location being discussed on the radio.
1. Isaac Wasn’t A FEDRA Soldier In The Last Of Us Part II
The HBO Series Has Expanded On His Character
In episode 4 of The Last of Us season 2, we delve deeper into the past of Jeffrey Wright’s character, Isaac. The narrative begins with a flashback, depicting Isaac as a soldier under FEDRA. Unlike in The Last of Us Part II where his backstory is hinted at through dialogue and collectible notes, here we see him choosing to rebel against his fellow soldiers and join the resistance, eventually becoming part of the WLF. Conversely, in The Last of Us Part II, Isaac’s past as a FEDRA agent isn’t explicitly revealed; instead, he is portrayed as a former marine from Seattle only. Therefore, this season is providing additional insights into Isaac’s character that weren’t present in the game.
