Interactive Brokers now allows UK clients to trade crypto

As a seasoned crypto investor with a background in traditional financial markets, I’m thrilled to see Interactive Brokers U.K. (IBUK) expanding its offerings to include cryptocurrency trading. Having experienced the fragmentation of the crypto market and the complexity of managing multiple accounts, I appreciate the convenience of being able to trade Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash alongside stocks, futures, options, bonds, ETFs, mutual funds, and fiat currencies on a unified platform.

Interactive Brokers U.K. Limited, the British branch of Interactive Brokers, now offers cryptocurrency trading to its customers.

Based on a Businesswire press announcement, investors and financial consultants affiliated with IBUK are now able to conduct transactions in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) via the Interactive Brokers trading system.

Investors have the opportunity to trade not only the mentioned cryptocurrencies but also various other investment instruments like stocks, futures, options, bonds, ETFs, mutual funds, and fiat currencies through a single platform, as stated in the announcement.

Additionally, IBUK sets commission rates for cryptocurrency trades at between 0.12% and 0.18%. The actual fee amount is influenced by the client’s monthly trading volume. Notably, there are no charges for custody services, as stated in the press release.

As a crypto investor, I’d like to highlight that Interactive Brokers is among the largest electronic trading platforms with approximately $128.42 billion in assets under management as of the end of 2023. The company reported generating a total revenue of around $4.34 billion in the previous year based on publicly available information.

Significantly, Interactive Brokers expands its crypto-related offerings to include the U.K., joining numerous other regions. On November 24, 2023, the firm obtained a cryptocurrency trading license in Hong Kong.

Approximately five business days elapsed before Interactive Brokers collaborated with OSL, a fellow brokerage platform, to provide cryptocurrency trading opportunities to retail investors based in the designated region.

In April 2023, Thomas Peterffy, the founder of Interactive Brokers, expressed his viewpoint that cryptocurrencies hold no value, despite being a holder of some digital assets himself.
