FCC Seeks AI Disclosure in TV and Radio Political Ads

As a researcher with a background in media and technology studies, I strongly support Jessica Rosenworcel’s proposal to increase transparency around the use of AI-generated content in political ads on TV and radio. With the November elections just around the corner, it is more important than ever to prevent misinformation and deep fakes from influencing voters.

On Wednesday, FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel put forth a new proposition. This regulation calls for disclosing AI-produced content in political advertisements on television and radio, aiming to boost transparency and shield voters from potential deception by AI as the upcoming November elections approach.

As an analyst, I would explain it this way: The proposed rule that I’ve worked on involves disclosures for AI-generated content in political ads aired on cable TV, satellite radio, and similar platforms. This doesn’t prohibit such content but rather mandates transparent on-screen and written notifications. It applies to both candidate advertisements and those addressing issues. However, it’s important to note that the FCC’s jurisdiction does not reach internet or social media ads, as well as streaming services.

Rosenworcel underscored the significance of disclosing AI utilization in political advertisements, drawing attention to the possible dangers of “deep fake” media that misrepresent individuals or occurrences. In reaction to these apprehensions, organizations such as Public Knowledge have called on Congress to implement broader regulations governing AI in political advertising.
