Validators serve a vital function in ensuring the network’s security and authenticity. They are responsible for creating new blocks and confirming transactions; however, they aren’t the sole guardians of the system’s upkeep.
As a researcher studying the Polkadot network, I can tell you that it’s my role, along with other dedicated individuals, to uphold the network’s integrity as full nodes, also known as “Fishermen.”
What Are Polkadot Fishermen?
On Polkadot, individuals referred to as “Fishermen” are responsible for safeguarding the network by detecting any malicious actions and signaling such occurrences to validators. Any parachain on Polkadot can assume this protective role. Polkadot incorporates a range of innovative security features, with Fishermen being one of them, contributing significantly to the preservation of the network’s overall security and trustworthiness.
As an analyst, I’ve discovered that while each consensus mechanism, including Nominated Proof-of-Stake, has its strengths, they also come with vulnerabilities. For instance, validators in a Nominated PoS system could potentially collude to suppress transactions or engage in double spending, which undermines the network’s security. To address this issue, the concept of Fishermen was introduced.
What Is The Importance Of Polkadot Fishermen?
On Polkadot, there are non-producing nodes known as Fishermen responsible for overseeing validator actions and signaling foul play. Imagine them as impartial referees who don’t produce blocks but ensure fair gameplay by keeping an eye out for any invalid states. To join their ranks, aspirants need to make a minimal investment, making the opportunity accessible to a broader community of users.
Fishermen are remunerated for disclosing unlawful actions to Polkadot’s network. But, if they provide false reports, they stand to lose their investment. This setup strongly encourages fishermen to remain alert and precise when identifying any wrongdoing on the network. By doing so, they safeguard not only the network but also their own stake.
Fishermen significantly contribute to safeguarding the network against long-range assaults, which pose a significant danger to its security. In a long-range attack, an adversary possessing immense computational power or an abundant number of tokens could manipulate the blockchain’s history, altering it for their benefit. The diligent efforts of Fishermen help minimize this risk, thereby ensuring the network remains secure.
An Evolving Role
In different Polkadot networks, the number of Fishermen nodes can fluctuate. While some networks might have just one Fisherman, others may host several. The Fishermen’s function is still under development in Polkadot, and it could change as the platform grows and advances. Currently, they play a crucial role in the blockchain world by contributing to network security through decentralization and multiple protective layers.
