Hyundai Introduces AI Sound Analysis for Quality Inspection

As an analyst with extensive experience in the manufacturing industry, I am truly impressed by Hyundai Mobis’ latest innovation – the implementation of Acoustic AI for quality inspection. This groundbreaking system uses sound analysis to detect defects in real-time, marking a significant leap forward from traditional AI systems focused on language tasks.

Hyundai Mobis, a pioneer in automotive technology, has unveiled an advanced AI system for sound analysis in their manufacturing processes to enhance product quality inspections.

At the Changwon manufacturing site where Electric Power Steering (EPS) is produced, the latest innovation is the Acoustic AI system. This system sets a new standard in production, differing from conventional AI systems that primarily focus on language processing. Instead, it excels in recognizing and interpreting distinct sounds essential for rigorous quality evaluation.

Hyundai Mobis intends to broaden the application of this system across more production lines, focusing initially on components such as braking systems that are prone to generating noise during use. Remarkably, this AI identifies defects at a rapid pace of one unit every second, which is essential for upholding stringent quality control in the factory’s yearly output of approximately 1.3 million EPS units.

Choi Nak-Hyun, Hyundai Mobis’ Vice President of Digital Transformation, declared, “This project signifies a trailblazing advancement in process innovation, not just within the automotive industry but also on a global manufacturing scale. We will persistently roll out distinctive AI technologies for production, research and development, and enhancements to working conditions.”

At the Changwon plant, which manufactures around 1.3 million EPS (Energy Absorbing Polystyrene) units yearly, the Acoustic AI system runs swiftly, examining around one unit every second. By scrutinizing the sound waveforms produced by EPS motors, this advanced technology identifies inconsistencies that could potentially signal defects impacting steering functionality and safety.

Hyundai Mobis plans to verify and enhance its Acoustic AI technology using data-driven understandings, aiming to improve its functionalities and retain a dominant position in the global market for AI-powered manufacturing solutions. This endeavor reaffirms their dedication to pushing the boundaries of intelligent factory innovations.

As an analyst, I would describe it this way: I’m excited to note that Hyundai Mobis has taken a trailblazing approach by introducing its Acoustic AI system into manufacturing processes. This innovative technology relies on sophisticated sound analysis to elevate production quality, marking a significant advancement in the realm of industrial inspections.
