As a seasoned film critic with a deep appreciation for the action-comedy genre, I can’t help but be thrilled by the latest addition to the iconic Beverly Hills Cop franchise: Axel F. Being a longtime fan of the original movies, I was eagerly anticipating this fourth installment and wasn’t disappointed.
The hilarious and hugely popular action comedy series “Beverly Hills Cop,” featuring Eddie Murphy as the quick-witted Detroit detective Axel Foley, was a game-changer in Hollywood. This franchise introduced Murphy as a captivating leading man, with fans eagerly following his adventures as he tackled exciting cases in the luxurious California city. Alongside Murphy, the films showcased the skills of Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Ronny Cox. With a total of four exhilarating installments, “Beverly Hills Cop” has amassed an impressive $735 million at the global box office.
Enthusiasts of the franchise and the captivating Murphy were thrilled when news broke that he would be back in Beverly Hills for another exciting journey, three decades since the debut of the third movie.
As a huge fan of the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about Axel F’s return to the west coast in the latest installment. Having grown up watching Eddie Murphy bring Axel F’s sass and wit to life on the big screen, I was thrilled to see him once again investigating a mystery while reconnecting with his estranged daughter Jane.
13 Axel Checks in at a Beverly Hills Hotel
Beverly Hills Cop
With his quick wit and ability to think quickly on his toes, Axel Foley demonstrated his cleverness as one of the most resourceful detectives around. He successfully secured a lavish suite at the prestigious Beverly Palm Hotel in his signature fashion.
When I first walk up to the reception desk, I seamlessly slip into my role as a reporter for Rolling Stone magazine, intending to interview music legend Michael Jackson. However, unremarkably, the receptionist remains skeptical of my unlikely tale as a detective attempting to disguise myself.
Be Careful What You Ask For
The receptionist informs Jackson and Axel that there are no reservations for them, but instead of conceding, he goes on an impassioned diatribe, alleging racial discrimination.
An amusing and animated response from Axel draws the interest of another hotel employee, who shares with the detective that the luxury suite had indeed been canceled, coming with a substantial nightly price tag of $235. Axel’s dumbfounded expression upon learning this cost leaves everyone present in a fit of laughter, as he comes to terms with overspending beyond his means.

12 Room Service & Bananas in the Tailpipe
Beverly Hills Cop
Once he was comfortably ensconced in his expensive room at the Beverly Palm Hotel, Axel considered ordering some food from room service as a small indulgence. To his surprise, detectives Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) of the Beverly Hills Police Department were assigned to monitor him closely.
I place a call from my room asking for a shrimp salad sandwich with salmon sauce, and a sweet treat to follow. I request the hotel staff to deliver it outside to the two officers in their car. When they receive this generous meal, courtesy of Axel Foley, they’re surprised and wonder how I knew they were there. Rosewood asks me the question, and Taggart jokes, “Because I let you drive the car.“
As the duo is preoccupied with their extravagant feast, Axel devises a plan to unsettle their annoying companions. He swiftly approaches their vehicle and stuffs bananas into their exhaust pipe, smirking at the bystander as he notices the clever detective’s observation. With Jenny, Axel jumps into his Mercedes and speeds off in search of a promising lead. Rosewood and Taggart attempt to follow suit, but their car suddenly fails them, leaving them frustrated and immobile on the side of the road.
11 Axel vs. The Meter Lady
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
Eddie Murphy demonstrated that no time had passed when he rejoined the “Beverly Hills Cop” series after a thirty-year absence, starring in the latest exhilarating installment titled “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” In this movie, Murphy’s character, Axel Foley, goes back to Beverly Hills to tackle a case that holds personal significance and deals with his long-lost daughter.
Upon arriving in California barely moments ago, Axel encounters trouble when he visits the office of his longtime friend Rosewood, hoping to locate the missing ex-detective who has transitioned into private investigation work. Unbeknownst to Axel, instead of finding his friend, he stumbles upon a band of men rummaging through the office for a valuable item.
A Hilarious Roadside Showdown
Swift-thinking Axel blends in with his team, but when his disguise is exposed, he faces relentless pursuit from criminals. In a desperate bid for freedom, Axel attempts to seize control of a meter maid’s vehicle, only to encounter resistance and end up in hot water as she clings to the car.
The woman’s unyielding refusal to relent and Axel’s hilarious response to being pepper-sprayed during an attempted car journey were typical behaviors for this iconic film character, leaving viewers in anticipation.
10 Axel & Serge Meet
Beverly Hills Cop
The initial encounter between Axel (Eddie Murphy) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot), an extravagant and showy employee at Victor Maitland’s art gallery, is without a doubt one of the most humorous scenes in the Beverly Hills Cop series. As two dramatically contrasting individuals, they engaged in an animated conversation that left audiences laughing.
At the elegant art gallery, the European salesman struggled to correctly pronounce Axel’s name, leading to amusing confusion. Meanwhile, detective Serge’s heavy accent hindered his comprehension, causing misunderstandings. Axel, attempting to visit Jenny, was subjected to various mispronunciations from Serge – “Achmed” and “Akwell” being two examples – eventually settling on calling him Foley instead.
Many Ways to Say Axel
After Axel inquires about the price of an unusual item in the art gallery, Serge responds with “It costs $130,000.” Shockingly, Axel reacts by exclaiming “Really? I find that hard to believe!” or “Come on, that can’t be right!” in a raised voice.
What ensues is a comical contest between both men as they each seemingly try to out-do the other and pitch their voices higher, with Axel thoroughly enjoying the zany conversation. Fans thoroughly enjoyed Axel’s chemistry with Serge so much that the vivacious character returned for Beverly Hills Cop III, this time as the boutique owner who amusingly still can’t pronounce Axel’s name.
9 Axel Works His Magic at a Renovated Mansion
Beverly Hills Cop II
I’ve always had a knack for assuming new identities, and when it comes to posing as a building inspector for my own benefit, there’s no one quite like me, Axel Foley. With my last adventure in Beverly Hills reminding me of the steep prices in California, I made a decision to change things up and seek out a beautifully renovated mansion to call home during my current visit. My life experiences have taught me that adaptability is key, and taking on the guise of a building inspector seemed like the perfect solution for both saving some money and getting a peek at some pretty impressive properties.
Axel, a skilled wordsmith, didn’t hesitate to put a halt to the renovation project. He broke the news to the team that plans had shifted, and ordered the foreman for a week-long break, warning them sternly that they were making a “major blunder” due to the building having “right angles” and being “square.”
Axel Enjoys the High Life
Axel truly appreciated the elegance of his lodgings; he relished each moment at the opulent mansion, taking full advantage of its enticing features such as the spacious swimming pool, Jacuzzi, poolside bar, and an ample number of lavish bedrooms.
When Rosewood and Taggart arrive on the scene, they assume Axel is burglarizing the place, prompting the seasoned cop to order him out of the pool for an investigation. In a slapstick turn of events, Taggart slips into the pool instead, donning a plaid-pants outfit that leaves Axel rolling his eyes and exiting with distaste.
8 Arrested For Being Thrown Out a Window
Beverly Hills Cop
With a knack for theatrics, Axel makes an indelible mark on Victor Maitland when the tenacious detective uncovers connections between the art gallery owner and his late best friend Mikey, who was tragically murdered.
Using a disguise as a florist, Axel attempts to enter Maitland’s office with the intent of inquiring about his deceased friend. However, his reception is far from welcoming. Before he can even begin questioning Maitland, he is forcibly removed from the premises by the businessman’s henchmen. They roughly escort Axel out of the building and hurl him through a glass window with great force.
Axel Can’t Believe His Bad Luck
One might think that being launched through glass would garner some sympathy from police officers, but that didn’t prove to be the case for poor Axel. When the police roll up shortly after the assault, they demand that Axel put his hands on the hood of the car, to which he asks in disbelief, “What kind of s*** is this? You guys are arresting me for getting thrown out of a f***ing window?”
The officers took Axel into custody, and when he inquired about the reason, they informed him it was for carrying a hidden weapon and causing a commotion. Unfazed by the situation, Axel retorted with this amusing comeback:
“Hey, I didn’t mean to disrupt the tranquility here! But they literally threw me out of a window. And getting shoved from a moving car, come on, what’s that supposed to be? Jaywalking ticket? This is completely absurd!”
7 From the Strip Club to “Super Cops”
Beverly Hills Cop
As a devoted fan, I’d put it this way: Axel, with his knack for storytelling, endeavors to paint an alluring image for Lt. Bogomil (Ronny Cox) following our successful thwarting of the robbery at the strip club, in collaboration with Taggart and Rosewood.
The three officers found themselves in deep trouble when they got caught visiting an adult establishment during their shift. They had to return to the BHPD, facing the angry lieutenant’s reprimand. Seizing the moment, Axel chose to shield his colleagues and claimed that they had been there to watch over him, making them unsuspecting heroes in this situation.
A Perfectly Good Lie Ruined
Axel shares an intricately planned account of his lively night at the club. Suddenly, Taggart and Rosewood became alert as they spotted two shady characters trying to infiltrate the venue, leading them to intervene and prevent the crime from happening.
The astute detective continued the captivating tale, referring to the duo as “exceptional officers,” almost forgetting the need for capes based on their actions. Bogomil appeared to embrace the narrative. In the end, Taggart confessed to his superior and gave Axel recognition, but Axel responded, “We ruined a perfectly good deception by deciding to tell the truth instead.”
6 Taggart’s Mistaken For President Gerald Ford
Beverly Hills Cop II
In “Beverly Hills Cop II,” Axel reconnects with his friends Rosewood and Taggart from California to work on a case: the shooting of Lt. Bogomi. As fate would have it, their investigation takes them to yet another familiar haunt – the strip club located at 385 North.
As a gamer, I can tell you that it doesn’t take long before Axel works his charisma and transforms the room, convincing everyone that Taggart is none other than former President Gerald Ford. Accompanied by Rosewood from the Secret Service, we assure their protection. When a skeptical club employee questions Taggat’s resemblance to Ford, Axel playfully quips, “Have you ever seen Gerald Ford without his makeup?” keeping our amusing ruse alive.
Two Peas in a Gerald Ford Pod
Axel passionately delivers a speech with fiery intensity, expressing that while Ford was unable to visit strip clubs as president, he now desires to enjoy this experience as a regular citizen. Rosewood and Taggart choose to let their hair down for the moment. However, Taggart, formerly known as Ford, appears uncomfortable when a waitress offers him a drink and refers to him in a respectful manner.
When insecure Taggart questions Axel about resembling Gerald Ford, Axel responds with the humorous remark, “Both of you look just like Gerald Ford,” bringing joy to Rosewood.
5 Axel Marvels Over a Clean Cop Car
Beverly Hills Cop
As I sat in the back of the police car in Beverly Hills, shocked by my unexpected arrest after being thrown out of Maitland’s glass window, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the sleek and immaculate condition of the vehicle. It was a stark contrast to what I was used to back in Detroit. In an attempt to make small talk with the two officers, who seemed less than amused by my presence, I commented on how their squad car was even nicer than my apartment back home. It was clear that I was still in awe of the cleanliness and sophistication of Beverly Hills, something I wasn’t used to in my grittier hometown.
The Wonders of Beverly Hills
As they approach the police station, Axel continues his non-stop chatter and asks the officers if they can identify any famous actors they might encounter since he’s never experienced anything like it. The policemen request that he quiet down, and after a brief moment of silence, the detective is left speechless by the impressive sight of the Beverly Hills Police Department.
After Axel has been securely confined in his jail cell, he continues to be captivated by the charm of the city and is greatly pleased with the convenience of having a telephone in his cell. He even asks an officer if he could possibly “stay a little longer as I had ordered some pizza.”
4 Greetings to the “Illegal Chop Shop”
Beverly Hills Cop III
Eddie Murphy once again slipped into the shoes of Detective Axel Foley for “Beverly Hills Cop III.” In this installment, Murphy teamed up with director John Landis for a reunion following their previous projects, “Trading Places” and “Coming to America.” Kicking off with the customary high energy, Axel embarks on a mission to dismantle a car theft gang. Rather than charging in with guns blazing as was his habit, he opted for a more refined approach – politely approaching the hideout and knocking on the door instead.
Axel Puts His Manners First
As a seasoned undercover cop with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve learned that sometimes the best way to gather information from criminals is by speaking directly and without hesitation. So when I find myself facing off against a pair of shady characters, guns in hand, I don’t beat about the bush. Instead, I greet them with a casual “Hey there, how’s it going?” in my best attempt to disarm their suspicions. Then, feigning concern, I ask if this is the illegal chop shop they’re running. I might even express interest in having my wife’s old Buick “chopped up” since she’s been acting strangely lately. It’s all part of the game, and with a little finesse and a lot of guts, I’ve learned to blend in and get the job done.
Certainly, taking a confrontational stance against this individual didn’t sit well with them, leading the suspects to respond in a typical fashion when feeling threatened: they drew their weapons and indiscriminately fired towards Axel in alarm.
3 Axel Poses as Victor Maitland’s Lover
Beverly Hills Cop
As a huge fan of “Beverly Hills Cop,” one scene that never fails to make me laugh is when Axel Foley, in order to gain entry into an exclusive club, assumes the identity of Victor Maitland’s lover named “Ramon.” To convince the skeptical maître d’, he goes all out, putting on a show of affection and passion. It’s a hilarious moment that adds depth to Axel’s character and keeps me entertained every time I watch the movie.
The doubtful maître d’ raises an eyebrow at Axel, feigning as Victor’s displeased partner, and declares he has a crucial message for him. Assuming it’s a routine matter, the maître d’ offers to deliver it personally, but the situation then takes an amusingly unexpected turn.
Axel Plays a Lover Scorned
About a week ago, I met a guy named Ramon. Recently, he shared with the maitre’d that this person had visited a clinic and discovered they had herpes simplex type 1. With a hint of embarrassment, Ramon advised me to consult my doctor before any potential complications arose.
Understanding that this was not a discussion he should be involved in, the maitre’d instructed Axel to inform Victor about it directly and permitted him to re-enter the dining room. This interaction highlighted Murpy’s courage as an artist and underscored why he is one of the most gifted comedians in cinema today.
2 Rosewood Loves His Plants & Guns
Beverly Hills Cop II
In the cherished series franchise, viewers enjoyed the heartwarming teamwork between Foley, Rosewood, and Taggart. Once more, this delightful threesome shone in the sequel.
In the first movie, Rosewood demonstrated remarkable shooting skills. However, his love for weapons became more evident in the sequel, a trait that puzzled and alarmed both Taggart and Axel. They grew concerned and kept urging him, “Billy, it’s time we had a serious conversation.”
A Man of Many Interests
When the law enforcement team gathers at Rosewood’s apartment for a meeting, Axel is taken aback by the large number of plants filling every corner of the house. He quips that it resembles a wildlife sanctuary, to which Rosewood explains that he’s “making an effort to keep things peaceful.” With great enthusiasm, Rosewood refers to his green companions as friends and shares the names of his most cherished ones. He also adds with a chuckle that different types of music influence their growth in unique ways.
The trio connects and hums the tune of “The Dating Game” theme song. Later, Axel unexpectedly finds Rosewood’s extensive gun collection, igniting his fascination with Sylvester Stallone – a possible nod to the actor’s near involvement in the film franchise.
1 A Side-Splitting Helicopter Ride
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
In the latest instalment of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” a memorable moment occurs when Axel and Detective Bobby Abbott (Josequently portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) engage in a hilarious interchange following their successful escape from custody. Their audacious plan to make a hasty exit involves attempting to hijack a helicopter.
Since Bobby had previously worked for the LAPD Air Support unit, it seemed logical to Axel that his daughter’s ex-boyfriend would be capable of flying a helicopter to help them evade the police. However, Bobby held back an essential piece of information – he had been involved in a helicopter crash before joining the detective force.
Bobby’s Belated Confession
Without a doubt, Axel’s expression conveyed the situation clearly, and as they were relentlessly chased through the urban landscape at a snail’s pace in a helicopter, the men clung on for dear life. Their pursuit ended disastrously when they crashed the helicopter right in the heart of a golf course.
As a gamer, I couldn’t help but chime in when Bobby showed some doubtful flying abilities during our latest mission in Beverly Hills. I praised his efforts while offering constructive criticism, admitting that I might have even made a few more mistakes myself, though not by much. The tension on our faces as we navigated through the narrow streets was palpable and added to the excitement of this installment’s most memorable moments.
