CJ ENM Names Jang Kyung ik CEO of Powerhouse K-Drama Subsidiary Studio Dragon

As a seasoned gamer with a deep appreciation for Korean entertainment, I’m thrilled to see Jang Kyung ik taking the helm at CJ ENM’s Studio Dragon. With his impressive track record at Next Entertainment World and Studio & NEW, he’s proven himself as a visionary executive in the industry. His production of hit dramas like “Descendants of the Sun,” “Doctor Cha,” and the groundbreaking sci-fi series “Moving” showcase his ability to create captivating content that resonates with audiences both locally and globally.

In Seoul on Monday, CJ ENM, a significant player in the Korean entertainment industry, announced that seasoned executive Jang Kyung ik will assume the role of CEO for their drama production division, Studio Dragon.

As an assistant to a successful figure in the Korean entertainment industry, I’ve been following Jang’s impressive career trajectory from my gaming chair. He’s now joining our team at CJ ENM after leading New Entertainment World (NEW) as head of their film division and president of their new global content production branch, Studio & NEW. Last year, under his wing, we produced the K-drama action sci-fi series “Moving,” which shattered records by becoming Disney+’s most-watched international streaming show to date. I can’t wait to see what innovative projects he brings to our table next!

“CJ ENM named Jang for the role to boost Studio Dragon’s standing as a top content provider in the international industry, according to a representative of CJ ENM.”

During Jang’s time at NEW, some notable productions were released, such as the successful dramas “Descendants of the Sun” and “Doctor Cha.” Additionally, the movie “The Great Battle” was produced, which grossed more than $41 million in revenue.

Starting in 2016, Studio Dragon of CJ ENM has been a powerful player in the production of Korean and international series. With eight drama subsidiaries currently active, they have created an impressive 249 series, amounting to approximately 3,928 episodes. Notable among these are shows that gained significant global popularity following partnerships with Netflix, such as “Sweet Home,” “The Glory,” and “Crash Landing on You.”

Jang’s new position involves leading Studio Dragon’s global expansion efforts, which began in 2019 with the establishment of their U.S. branch in Los Angeles and continued with the opening of Studio Dragon Japan in 2022. The studio has collaborated with Apple TV+ and Skydance Media on the production of “The Big Door Prize,” a two-season English language series that premiered in 2023 and 2024. With several international co-productions under development, as well as plans to adapt popular Korean shows like “Crash Landing on You” and “Vincenzo” for American audiences, Studio Dragon is poised to expand its reach on the global stage.
