Trump Rally Shooting Draws Viewers to TV News

As a dedicated gamer and news enthusiast, I can’t help but be captivated by the recent events unfolding before our eyes. The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump during his campaign rally in Pennsylvania last Saturday left me glued to my TV screen, joining millions of Americans who did the same.

Millions of people tuned in to watch TV news coverage on Saturday as an attempt was made on the life of ex-president Donald Trump.

As a seasoned journalist who has covered numerous breaking news stories, I can tell you that the events unfolding at the Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania were shocking and heartbreaking. One life was tragically taken, and several people, including former President Trump himself, were injured before the situation was brought under control by Secret Service agents. Among the injured were two rally attendees who were reportedly in critical condition. The gravity of the situation was palpable, and the air was thick with uncertainty and sadness.

Approximately 16.07 million people tuned in to the primetime Saturday coverage of the shooting on ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, as indicated by early Nielsen ratings (data from NBC was yet to be released). The viewership reached its highest point during the 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT hour with nearly 19 million people simultaneously watching on these five networks.

I was among the nearly 19 million people who tuned in to watch President Joe Biden’s Oval Office address last Sunday night. This total was spread across no less than seven different television networks, with NBC and Fox being a part of that audience count.

In the two occurrences examined, Fox News led the pack with the highest viewership. During primetime on Saturday, it attracted 6.49 million viewers, significantly more than second-place ABC which had 3.08 million viewers. CBS followed closely behind with 2.69 million viewers, while CNN and MSNBC trailed with 2.45 million and 1.36 million viewers respectively. It’s important to note that these numbers are notably higher than their usual viewership: Fox News typically sees around 1.2 million viewers on Saturday nights, while CNN and MSNBC usually draw under 500,000. ABC and CBS have also seen under 2 million viewers each in recent Saturdays, excluding sports programming.

At 8 p.m. ET on Saturdays, I tuned in to Fox News and joined 7.12 million other viewers. Meanwhile, ABC attracted 3.97 million viewers, CBS had 3.4 million, CNN drew in 2.8 million, and MSNBC managed to pull in 1.65 million.

During Biden’s 8 p.m. ET Oval Office speech asking for less heated politics on Sundays, Fox News garnered a viewership of 5.38 million. ABC followed with 3.77 million viewers and CBS had 3.36 million. An average of 2.29 million watched on Fox, while NBC had 1.81 million, CNN had 1.28 million, and MSNBC had 883,000.)
