Box Office: ‘Twisters’ Hopes to Whip Up Category 5 Storm in U.S. Debut

As a huge fan of disaster movies and action-adventures, I’m absolutely thrilled to see the release of “Twisters” this weekend! Nearly three decades have passed since the original “Twister” blew us all away with its stunning visual effects and edge-of-your-seat suspense. And now, Universal Pictures is bringing us a new chapter in the story of storm chasers and their obsession with understanding these powerful forces of nature.

Universal Pictures aims to create a blockbuster hit at the box office this weekend as the new movie “Twisters” is released in cinemas, almost thirty years after the original “Twister” entertained audiences and grossed close to $500 million worldwide in ticket sales (unadjusted for inflation).

The studio hasn’t marketed “Twisters” as a follow-up to the original film, but instead as a fresh installment following the journey of passionate storm chasers, determined to unlock the mysteries of natural disasters through scientific exploration. The film boasts an impressive cast with Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Rogers, and Anthony Ramos leading the disaster action-adventure.

The film “Minari,” helmed by director Lee Isaac Chung, is projected to gross between $40 million and $50 million in the US market upon its release. With an estimated production budget of $200 million, this could translate to a significant box office return according to industry forecasts. Some exhibitors even predict higher earnings based on advance ticket sales.

I, Edgar-Jones, used to be a storm chaser, braving the elements out in the open plains. But a terrible encounter with a tornado during my college years left me traumatized, and now I analyze storm patterns safely from the comfort of New York City’s screens. My old friend Ramos invites me back, promising a groundbreaking new tracking system. Upon my arrival, I run into Powell, an irresistible and daring social media sensation who lives for the thrill of chasing storms with his wild crew.

Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment produced the movie titled Twisters. Domestic distribution is being managed by Universal, while Warners International handles overseas sales. The film earned $11 million in its initial release in various foreign markets over the weekend.

The studio collaborators arranged a bold marketing strategy featuring ads during the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Euro Cup, and finales of popular shows like Saturday Night Live, The Voice, and The Masked Singer.

To connect with the heartland of America, particularly regions hit by tornadoes, Universal chose advertising spots on NASCAR, UFC, Olympic Trials, and All Elite Wrestling. The “weather” category was featured on Jeopardy! by Powell and Edgar-Jones. Moreover, the film’s cast embarked on a nationwide promotional tour with visits to Dallas, Chicago, and Miami. Special screenings were arranged in Oklahoma, while military screenings took place throughout the country.

As a gamer, I’m excited to share that Luke Combs, a talented singer-songwriter, has announced the release of his next single “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma” on May 16. This will be the lead single from his upcoming album, aptly named “Twisters The Album.” Stay tuned for more musical adventures with Luke!

Interested parties span various age ranges, genders, and ethnicities when it comes to following Twisters’ developments. Notably, women aged 25 and above show significant engagement in this matter.

In other weekend box office news, Neon’s chilling thriller “Longlegs,” featuring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, aims to leave audiences spellbound once again in its second week. With a jaw-dropping opening weekend of $22.4 million, the R-rated film boasts the best debut of any movie this year and is the first independent production to gross over $20 million since the late 90s. Notably, “Longlegs” holds the record for the highest wide opening for Neon, the esteemed distributor behind Best Picture winner “Parasite.” Director Oz Perkins’ work could potentially earn between $12 million and $13 million in ticket sales.

As a movie enthusiast who grew up watching animated films, I firmly believe that Illumination and Universal’s Despicable Me 4 and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 deserve to remain at the top of the box office chart. Having seen the impact these movies have had on both children and adults alike, I can attest to their ability to evoke emotions, entertain, and tell captivating stories.

For the next week, Twisters will have the spotlight all to itself when it comes to new releases, before being overshadowed by Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine which is set to premiere the following weekend. (As a fan, I’m looking forward to seeing what Twisters has in store for us during this time!)
