Glen Powell Attached to Star in Remake of Kurt Russell's Backdraft

As a huge fan of classic movies and a long-time observer of Hollywood, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming projects involving Glen Powell and Brian Grazer. The news that Powell is set to star in a remake of the iconic 90s film “Backdraft,” which originally featured acting greats like Kurt Russell and Robert De Niro, is truly exhilarating.

Glen Powell is looking forward to leading the pack at the box office this weekend with “Twisters,” the sequel to the 1996 classic where Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton starred. With his Hollywood star on the rise, there’s no shortage of projects seeking his involvement. Notably, Academy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment has announced that Powell will star in a remake of another 1990s success – the firefighter film “Backdraft.” Originally released in 1991 and featuring an impressive ensemble cast including Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Robert De Niro, and the late Donald Sutherland, “Backdraft” was an unexpected box office sensation, earning $152 million and netting three Oscar nominations.

During an interview on CNBC about Hollywood’s current situation, Grazer – with over 40 years of experience – was queried if audiences were returning to cinemas as they did prior to COVID-19. Surprisingly, while addressing this issue, Grazer casually mentioned that not only is the film “Backdraft” being developed with Glen Powell set to star, but also a movie adaptation of his well-known early 2000s series, “24,” which previously featured Kiefer Sutherland.

“Entertainment has consistently produced movies that have a strong potential for success in theaters. Over the past 30 years, we’ve developed over 100 unique brands, such as Backdraft with Glen Powell and the upcoming collaboration with Disney-Fox on 24.”

Based on my experiences working in the entertainment industry, I’ve come to understand why streaming services and big studios often prioritize established brands over new material. With so many options available today, audiences are constantly looking for something familiar and comforting. Brands like “Beverly Hills Cop” or “Barbie,” which have been around for decades, carry with them a sense of nostalgia and instant recognition.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed how valuable the game formats from the late 90s to early 2000s have become in today’s scene. Streamers and studios are more cautious than ever before, preferring well-known brands with a strong fanbase. Our team is capitalizing on this trend by adding innovative twists or unique castings to established IPs. I’m particularly thrilled about our collaborations – we have Sidney Sweeney on board, and Scarlett Johansson’s involvement is another exciting development. And let’s not forget Glen Powell with Backdraft!

In the film “Backdraft” released in 1991, Industrial Light & Magic blended real fires with impressive visual effects. Grazer remarked that these effects could be even more stunning today due to advancements in AI and digital technology. Regarding the question of whether a movie about brave firefighters would still succeed as an original picture in 2024, Grazer was confident, attributing this to the advanced tools available to filmmakers now compared to three decades ago.

In my opinion, yes, the technology of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital effects has significantly progressed. Nowadays, we can even use miniature cameras, nearly unnoticeable, to film the intricacies of a fire in unprecedented ways due to these advancements.

There’s been no announcement from any studio about a remake or follow-up to “Backdraft” featuring Kurt Russell, but with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Imagine Entertainment backing the project, there’s a strong chance that we’ll be drawn back into the flames for another exciting adventure soon. Stay tuned for updates on “Backdraft” and a possible “24” film as information becomes available.
