Seth Rogen Shares The Funny Story Behind Sausage Party: Foodtopia’s Call Me By Your Name Spoof

As a long-time gamer and film enthusiast, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that “Sausage Party: Foodtopia,” now streaming on Amazon Prime, includes a number of unexpected homages to classic films. Among these references, none were more extensive or blatant than the end credits sequence in Episode 4, which featured Sufjan Stevens’ song “Visions of Gideon” from “Call Me By Your Name.”

Foodtopia” series on Amazon Prime includes many film references, including “Apocalypse Now” and “Superbad.” The longest and most obvious reference is the use of Sufjan Stevens’ song “Visions of Gideon” during the end credits, which is also heard in the final moments of “Call Me By Your Name.” Obtaining the rights to use this music was a challenging legal process. Seth Rogen shared his experience with TopMob, discussing his requests for permission from director Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevens himself.

I chatted with Seth Rogen, who writes, produces, and acts in “Sausage Party: Foodtopia,” during a press event. He spoke about the controversial joke related to a famous Italian filmmaker’s 2017 romantic film with Kristen Wiig and Sam Richardson by my side. Rogen shared these thoughts on the subject:

As a filmmaker with a deep appreciation for authenticity and artistic collaboration, I can attest that working with Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevens on a particular scene was an unforgettable experience. The challenge of bringing their unique creative visions to life was no small feat, but the opportunity to do so was worth every effort.

The rights in question are more challenging to acquire given that the scene contains over a minute of “Visions Of Gideon.” In this scene, Will Forte’s character, Jack, resorts to cannibalism out of starvation by eating his friend’s foot as the credits roll. While “Call Me By Your Name” and “Sausage Party” have distinct artistic merits, it is endearing that Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevens were willing to be involved in “Bones And All.” It is possible that the cannibalism scene piqued the director’s interest.

Perhaps we’ve been undervaluing the skills of filmmakers specializing in art cinema, according to Seth Rogen, known for his comedic talents.

Those people can be quite hard to convince when it comes to approving matters, yet they surprise with their wit and humor on various issues.

As a movie buff with a soft spot for indie films, I can’t help but be thrilled about the recognition “Call Me By Your Name” has received in the film industry. Having grown up watching movies and dreaming of being a part of that world, seeing Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevens earn their first Oscar nominations for this beautiful work is an inspiring moment for me.

Seth Rogen adopts a distinct working style compared to others. He often works in a state of heightened consciousness during filming, as demonstrated in “Sausage Party: Foodtopia” with its animated food products engaging in an extravagant orgy scene. Such an unusual partnership between Rogen and artists like Sufjan Stevens is just one of the many intriguing combinations that occur in Hollywood.
