The film “Catwoman,” featuring Halle Berry in the title role, was not only a financial disappointment, raking in only $82 million globally against an estimated production cost of $100 million, but it was also met with harsh criticism from critics. In commemoration of this anniversary, Berry has shared more insights into her dissatisfaction with the movie’s script. According to Berry herself:
In my opinion, the concept of Catwoman rescuing women from using harsh face creams seemed overly gentle compared to other superheroes who protect the world as a whole. It felt insignificant to me then, given my limited professional influence and confidence back then, that I couldn’t change this perspective.
In her storyline, Berry aimed to have her character rescue the world just like iconic superheroes Batman and Superman. However, the ending of “Catwoman” unfortunately didn’t follow this plan. The production of the movie underwent significant transformations and revisions, with one of its writers, John Brancato, describing it as a “runaway train.” For instance, he mentioned that the supposedly villainous cosmetics magnates portrayed by Sharon Stone and Lambert Wilson lost their intended edge and social commentary about the harmful aspects of beauty culture in the final cut.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the filming process, Berry openly discussed her experience of being mocked for her role in “Catwoman.” For years after its premiere, she bore the brunt of criticism and jokes. However, she managed to find humor in it by accepting a Razzie Award for the movie. Still, she confessed that she didn’t enjoy the harsh criticism but refused to let it hinder her or disrupt her passion for acting.
Halle Berry has expressed her dislike for some of her own acting projects, but she’s open to reprising her role as Catwoman if asked. Since the film’s release, she’s taken on the persona and met numerous enthusiastic fans of the movie.
