Paul Feig's Ghostbusters 2016 Anniversary Post Stirs Up Spirited Social Media Reaction

As a long-time fan of the original Ghostbusters, I can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic when I see Paul Feig commemorating the anniversary of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. Eight years have passed since this reboot graced our screens, and it still sparks heated debates among fans.

Paul Feig, the director of the 2016 “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call” movie, celebrated its eight-year anniversary with a heartfelt tribute on social media. In his post, he expressed gratitude to the film’s supporters and fans, proudly declaring that they are all part of the Ghostbusters family. This announcement ignited diverse reactions from social media users, including those who cherished the movie, disliked it, or were unaware of its existence.

Numerous X users expressed their appreciation for the movie, commending the side-splitting acting of the principal cast. Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of Kevin, the receptionist at the Ghostbusters’ base, was particularly admired by some viewers.

Ghostbusters 2016 Rubbed a Lot of People Up the Wrong Way

Although Feig is an accomplished movie director, and the cast in “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call” was applauded for their comedic synergy, this film encountered significant resistance. The original “Ghostbusters” holds a cherished spot in viewers’ hearts, making it tough to surpass. The 2016 adaptation wasn’t a catastrophic failure by any standard (it has a 74% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but it failed to replicate the enchantment of the iconic Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson original for its dedicated fanbase.

A 1984 horror comedy directed by Ivan Reitman has an impressive 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and was awarded the BAFTA for Best Special Visual Effects. It also received two nominations at the Academy Awards.

When the movie franchise introduced female leads for its cast, there were some negative reactions online during its premiere. User @Coolio_Wolfus among others has continued to criticize the film, referring to it as “wokeness gone wrong” or “unnecessary social commentary in cinema.”

The movie “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call,” as reported by Box Office Mojo, earned $229.1 million globally at the box office. However, with a production budget of $144 million and additional marketing costs, the studio required around $300 million in revenue for Paul Feig’s reboot to be considered a financial triumph. The film’s underperformance at the box office and tepid audience reception raised doubts among some viewers about its fan base.

In today’s social media discussions, political comments abounded (even harmless topics like “Ghostbusters” aren’t spared), and there were some intriguing observations. For instance, @DoctorWhat1983 pondered the potential link between the “Ghostbusters” movie series and demons entering our homes through televisions.

Credit to user @KristofferGair for raising an intriguing query: In light of the numerous multiverse tales, could it be feasible that the genuine cast and the current one appear together in a single film?

If Feig came across any feedback on his post, let’s hope it was this one: it would bring us joy to witness McCarthy and Murray team up again following their work on “St. Vincent.”
