Cobra Kais Peyton List Talks Tory Choosing Kreese After SPOILER Dies

Cobra Kais Peyton List Talks Tory Choosing Kreese After SPOILER Dies

As a dedicated gamer and long-time fan of the Cobra Kai series, I have been deeply invested in the character development of Tory Nichols, portrayed by the talented Peyton List. Over the past five seasons, we’ve seen Tory’s life unfold with a heavy burden on her shoulders as she took care of her sick mother. Her world came crashing down when her mom passed away unexpectedly in the fifth episode of Season 6, “Best of the Best.”

Warning! Contains SPOILERS for Cobra Kai Season 6, Episode 5, “Best of the Best.”

Johnny Lawrence might not be Martin Kove’s sole vulnerability. In the captivating character development of “Cobra Kai” Season 6 – Part 1, we see Tory Nichols’ (played by Peyton List) storyline unfold. Throughout the first five seasons of the “Karate Kid” spin-off, Tory has been saddled with caring for her ailing mother. Tragically, in the fifth episode of Season 6 titled “Best of the Best,” Tory’s mother passes away unexpectedly. In an interview with TVLine, List spoke about Tory’s choice to seek solace in their long-standing relationship – Johnny’s former mentor, Kreese.

Based on the given dialogue, I believe that Tory’s loss significantly alters her perspective and motivations. Having realized that she cannot rely on others to prioritize her needs, she feels compelled to focus on herself and seek personal success. The pain of the loss pushes her towards securing the captain spot as a means to regain control over her life and accomplish something meaningful.

In a previous mention, it’s hinted that Kreese harbors a tender feeling towards Tory Nichols. Similar to other antagonists in “Cobra Kai,” there’s a chance for redemption for Kreese by the end of Season 6, and it may be through his connection with Tory. Kreese genuinely cares about her, and he was willing to jeopardize his longtime friendship with Terry Silver over her feelings at the close of Season 4.

Cobra Kai Showrunner Dishes on Tory Reuniting with Kreese

The preview of Cobra Kai seemed to reassure fans with its depiction of tranquility in the Valley after Terry Silver’s (Griffith’s) capture. However, what the sneak peek didn’t reveal was Tory Nichol’s (List’s) character development trajectory as Season 6 Part 1 unfolded.

After years of feuding, Tory and Sam (Mary Mouser) put their disagreements to rest. However, when Tory’s mother suddenly passed away, leaving her heartbroken, her storyline took an unexpected turn. In the finale of Season 6 Part 1, showrunner Jon Hurwitz hinted at Tory seeking guidance from Kreese (Kove). During an interview, Hurwitz shared:

Tory, who has a lengthy past with Sensei Kreese on the show, begins to question the authenticity of her new friendships. She wonders if she’s truly being given a fair chance. With the pressure mounting as she longs to become a world champion, not just for herself but for her mother, the thought of rejoining Kreese and his group becomes an appealing alternative in her mind.

Hurwitz said in the same interview:

I’ve always looked forward to Tori’s appearances on the show since her introduction in Season 2. It’s been a joy to see her character evolve over time. From the beginning, we learned that she puts her heart and soul into caring for her beloved mother who is ill.

In the initial five episodes, we get a peek into the relationship between her and her mother when she was young. Her mother was dealing with hardships, and they faced them together. The weight of carrying on, of making something out of herself and never giving up in life, is a heavy responsibility that she feels deeply, instilled in her by her mother.

Although Rotten Tomatoes ratings for “Cobra Kai” Season 6 have been disappointing, setting the stage for the final 10 episodes feels exciting as the plot thickens. And fans were rewarded with a climactic finale of Part 1, where Tory unexpectedly appeared from the shadows to align with Kreese and other Cobra Kai members in Barcelona, Spain.
