Kevin Feige Weighs in on “Trying to Crack” the New ‘Blade’ Movie, Says R-Rating Likely

As a long-time gamer and avid Marvel fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the return of Blade to the big screen. The news of Mahershala Ali taking on the iconic role was met with great excitement in the community, and I couldn’t wait to see how Marvel Studios would bring this beloved character back to life.

While a new instalment of the “Blade” series is in the making at Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, the studio president, has shared some information on their plans for the upcoming reboot.

Feige spoke with BlackTree TV for a chat, publicizing Disney’s upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine release on July 26. In an interview published over the weekend, he was questioned about the progression of a new Blade project. This initiative was initially unveiled at Comic-Con in 2019, with Mahershala Ali set to portray the leading half-vampire character.

The head of Marvel was questioned about how the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine” with an R-rating impacts their plans for “Blade,” since all past “Blade” films, featuring Wesley Snipes and starting with the 1998 original, carried an R-rating. The new Marvel Studios production of “Deadpool” is the first to earn this rating.

Feige responded, “I believe that’s correct. Over the past two years in our efforts to produce that film, our top priority has been taking our time and ensuring we create the best possible Blade movie instead of rushing it.”

I’ve always been a fan of the gritty and mature Blade films from the past. Rated-R, they truly captured the essence of the Blade character, much like Deadpool does today.

Last month, news broke out that Yann Demange had departed from the new “Blade” production, causing a stir. Previously, Bassam Tariq had stepped down during fall 2022 due to creative disagreements, halting the project’s planned entry into production at that time.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last week, attorney Shelby Weiser shared insights on the lengthy production timeline for Ali’s involvement in Blade (2019). She expressed her amazement, based on her career background, that despite Ali having agreed to join the project in 2019, filming had yet to commence.
