Kevin Feige Confirms Nova Television Series Is In The Works

As a long-time Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and frustration at the latest news about the development of the Nova series at Marvel Studios. On one hand, it’s fantastic to finally have some confirmation that the project is moving forward, and the fact that it will be a Disney+ series focuses on Richard Rider, the original Nova from the comics, is a welcome surprise.

As an avid Marvel fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting updates on the elusive Nova project. With Marvel Studios currently in the thick of Phase 5, which marks the second installment of the Multiverse Saga, it’s no wonder that we have a plethora of films and TV shows underway, introducing an array of fresh heroes. Yet, even with this exciting lineup, there’s always more to look forward to – like Nova!

According to Feige‘s conversation with Comic Book, Nova is currently being worked on at Marvel Studios for a Disney+ show. This series will primarily revolve around Richard Rider, who was the initial Nova character in the comics. However, fans need to be cautious about their enthusiasm as Feige mentioned that the production isn’t set to begin right away. In fact, he explicitly stated:

It’s three or four years out.

Nova’s Road in the MCU

The first hint at Nova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe came in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the Nova Corp was featured heavily in the film. John C. Reilly’s character, Rhomann Dey, is a major part of the backstory for Richard Rider, the most well-known person to hold the mantle of Nova. The destruction of the Nova Corp planet Xandar was referenced in Avengers: Infinity War. It seemed like Marvel Studios was going to try to use Avengers: Infinity War as the jumping-off point for Richard Rider’s origin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but it has been six years since that film, and by the time the Nova series arrives on Disney+ it will have been nearly ten years from Avengers: Infinity War.

As an avid Marvel fan, I was thrilled when the first news about a potential Nova project dropped back in 2022. Sabir Pirzada, the talented writer behind Moon Knight, was hired to pen a script, leading many of us to believe it would be a Disney+ special. However, more recent developments revealed that Nova is actually being developed as a series! Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, confirmed the news. Although we can expect to see Nova hit our screens within the next three to four years (around 2027 or 2028), it’s important to note that this puts its release date after Avengers: Secret Wars, which is currently scheduled for May 7, 2027. This means Nova won’t be part of Marvel Studios’ Multiverse Saga but instead will be a new addition to whatever exciting plans the studio has in store for Phase 7. Much like how Shang-Chi and Eternals marked the beginning of Phase 4, Nova could potentially be one of Marvel’s major character introductions to kick off Phase 7.

As a dedicated Marvel fan, I’m excited about the direction their television lineup is taking, even if that means Nova being put on hold for now. It’s true that some fans might be disappointed, but Marvel is making a conscious effort to prioritize quality over quantity in their TV shows. With so many amazing series already in production or upcoming – Agatha: Coven of Chaos in 2024, Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart in 2025, and potential seasons of What If…? and X-Men ’97 – there’s no denying that the Marvel television schedule is packed.

As an avid gamer and comic book fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be one of the lucky attendees at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. And get this – Marvel Studios is scheduled to make an appearance there! Can you believe it? With any luck, we might finally uncover some new details about Nova. Let’s cross our fingers and hope for some exciting revelations!
