Ryan Reynolds on How They Got Madonna to License “Like a Prayer” for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

As a massive fan of both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, I can only imagine the thrill they must have felt when they were given the opportunity to collaborate on a project like “Deadpool & Wolverine.” But the icing on the cake was getting Madonna’s blessing to use her iconic hit “Like a Prayer” in their film.

It wasn’t going to be an simple task for Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to obtain Madonna’s consent to include her 1989 song “Like a Prayer” in the film “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

In a recent interview with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM, as reported by People, the two actors and director Shawn Levy revealed that they personally asked the renowned singer for permission to use her hit track in their project.

“Levy described how we paid a visit to Madonna in person to demonstrate the part of ‘Like a Prayer’ in the project.”

Additionally, it’s important to mention that Madonna doesn’t merely grant permission to use the song, specifically that one. Obtaining the rights to it was a significant challenge, and employing it carried even greater significance. We paid her a visit to explain how we intended to utilize it and where.

During their visit, Levy remarked that it seemed as if they were encountering nobility in the presence of Madonna. Reynolds added a light-hearted comment, revealing that he needed to consult with one of her entourage to learn the proper way to address her.

“Instead of asking, ‘Can I simply say, “Madonna?”‘ the Free Guy actor recounted, “I could have said, ‘Hi Madonna, I’m Ryan.'””

The artist known as “Material Girl” made their visit a triumph by giving her approval for the use of her song and providing valuable suggestions for the “Deadpool & Wolverine” team during their work on the scene with “Like A Prayer.”

Reynolds commented, “She sang an excellent note.” He observed, and honestly added, “You should try this,” and amazingly enough, she was absolutely right.

“Within only two days, we began anew to record that specific detail. It significantly improved the sequence,” Levy explained.

The movie “Deadpool and Wolverine,” during which Reynolds and Jackman’s characters collaborate on a fresh assignment, is set to be released in theaters on July 26.
