Twisters Glen Powell Says Film Icons Note Influenced Ending: It's Why That Kid Is Still in This Game

As a huge fan of both Steven Spielberg and the thrilling world of storm chasing, I completely agree with the wise advice given by the legendary filmmaker regarding the relationship between Tyler (Glen Powell) and Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) in Twisters. Their shared passion for chasing tornadoes is what unites them, and a kiss would not have represented the true essence of their journey. The continuation of their story and the reinvigoration of Kate’s love for storm chasing are far more significant than any romantic moment.

Attention: The following information may reveal a spoiler from the movie “Twisters”. When Steven Spielberg, a renowned filmmaker and executive producer of the new disaster drama “Twisters”, shares his insights on making movies, it’s worth considering. During a recent press tour for this weekend’s top-grossing film at the box office, Glen Powell (who plays Tyler) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (playing Kate) disclosed that Spielberg suggested they should not kiss in their relationship portrayal based on his assessment. Edgar-Jones shared in an interview with Collider:

Based on my years of experience as a film enthusiast, I believe that ending a movie with an unexpected twist, like what seems to be a “Spielberg note,” adds depth and intrigue to the storyline. This device keeps the audience engaged and invested in the characters’ lives beyond the final frame.

Powell adds in the same interview (below):

As someone who has always been captivated by the raw power and beauty of storms since I was a child, I wholeheartedly agree with this interpretation of the movie. It’s not just about two people finding love; it’s about Kate rediscovering her passion for storm chasing and finding herself again. The shared experience of chasing the storms together brings them closer, but it’s not the primary focus of the film. Instead, it’s about Kate’s personal growth and the reinvigoration of her sense of purpose. Just like in Spielberg’s films, there’s a deep appreciation for the wonders of nature and the human spirit. This resonates with me on a personal level, as my own experiences with storm chasing have taught me that sometimes finding yourself means returning to what you love most. And that, in my opinion, is a powerful message worth sharing.

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar- Jones’ turbulent partnership in “Twisters” has made its debut in cinemas, and this new version is receiving rave reviews, even surpassing the Rotten Tomatoes score of its 1996 precursor. However, it seems the audience is more thrilled with this roller coaster experience than the critics. With an “A-” CinemaScore and a stunning 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s evident that moviegoers are captivated by the latest summer blockbuster contender. The film’s stars attribute the success of “Twisters” to its visually impressive special effects. Powell shared with Collider:

To truly convey the intended emotion for the audience when creating a ride or watching a movie, it’s essential that you experience those elements firsthand. This is what makes the experience enjoyable. You have access to top-notch special effects, and while they can generate an impressive tornado on screen, the immediate impact on the characters cannot be replicated with a friendly or light appearance. A tornado in reality is neither of those things.

Edgar-Jones said during the same sit-down:

In the movie, there’s an astonishing scene filmed in a single continuous take. We visit a motel, conceal ourselves in its pool, and emerge only to find that the entire establishment has been levelled to the ground behind us. I was left wondering in amazement, “How on earth are we going to pull this off with all the debris falling around us?”

I’ve seen some strange and fascinating things in my life, but nothing quite compares to the experience of witnessing a spectacle that involved a horse trailer, a vending machine, and people being pulled up in the air on wires. When I first heard about it, I couldn’t help but wonder, “How on earth is that going to work?”

The Twisters film surpassed expectations, grossing approximately $80.5 million in the US during its first weekend at the box office, exceeding the initial forecast of $50 million. It remains to be seen how long Powell and Edgar-Jones’ production will endure in theaters, as Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth and his clawed partner make their entrance into the 2024 summer movie scene on July 26.
