Aaron Sorkin Offers ‘West Wing’ Re-Write for 2024 Election: “Democrats Should Nominate Mitt Romney”

As a longtime fan of Aaron Sorkin‘s brilliant storytelling and insightful commentary on American politics, I find myself utterly captivated by his recent op-ed suggesting the Democratic party nominate Mitt Romney for the 2024 presidential election.

As someone who closely follows American politics and has witnessed the evolution of both the Republican and Democratic parties over the years, I find Aaron Sorkin’s proposal for the Democrats to nominate Mitt Romney in the 2024 election intriguing, albeit unlikely.

Sorkin, the creator of “The Social Network” and “The West Wing,” which earned him Oscars and Emmys respectively, highlighted the resemblances between President Bartlet from the fictional series “The West Wing” and this year’s political reality. Notable similarities included an attempt on a character’s life and a president dealing with a severe health issue.

Just like Biden, according to Sorkin’s writing, Bartlet pondered over the decision to seek re-election. The screenwriter shared that his character was determined to run once more and declared in the third season premiere, “I will win.”

Instead, Sorkin acknowledged that to make President Bartlet’s stubbornness appealing to “The West Wing” viewers, he downplayed the impact of his illness on Bartlet’s re-election prospects and ignored any threats from his opponent.

If Sorkin indicated that revealing Bartlet’s illness led to polling suggesting he would lose to his opponent, and this opponent was described as an uneducated and malicious figure with a noticeable psychiatric condition who communicated with followers at a fourth-grade level and disdained the law for fools and the underprivileged, and was admired by white supremacists – in such a scenario, Bartlet would have decided to withdraw from the race.

As a dedicated gamer, I can relate to the current political situation in the real world. In my gaming world, there’s always that one dominant character who seems unbeatable. And just like in politics, there isn’t any Democrat who is significantly outperforming Mr. Biden at the moment. Quitting, as tempting as it may be, doesn’t really ignite the same emotional response within me. It might be a brave move, but it doesn’t create that sense of excitement or anticipation for a potential comeback or change in the game’s dynamics.

“He proposed that the Democrats consider selecting a Republican as their candidate. Specifically, he suggested Mitt Romney for the Democratic Party’s nomination at their upcoming convention in the coming weeks.”

Sorkina believed that the selection wouldn’t only stir emotions with its pro-unification against Trump message, but also stood out for its uniqueness and self-sacrificing essence.

“He emphasized that making this decision represents more than just empty words; it’s a significant statement showing that this election transcends the usual issues and is instead focused on preventing an unstable individual from gaining control.”

In summary, he highlighted that this decision would primarily mark the end of Donald Trump’s presence in presidential politics.
