Shrek 5: What We Know So Far About The Long-Awaited Installment

Shrek 5: What We Know So Far About The Long-Awaited Installment

As a long-time fan of Eddie Murphy and the Shrek franchise, I can’t contain my excitement hearing that he’s returning to voice Donkey for Shrek 5! Growin’ up, Donkey was one of my favorite characters in those movies. He brought laughter and warmth to the screen, and his love for waffles even made me develop a soft spot for ’em. I remember watchin’ Shrek for the first time as a kid, and it felt like magic.

SOMEBODY ONCE TOLD ME…

As a long-time fan of the Shrek franchise, I can hardly contain my excitement! It’s been ages since we last heard any news about Shrek 5, and I must admit, I began to doubt if it would ever see the light of day. But now, finally, confirmation has arrived, and I simply cannot help but share the joyous news with all you fellow fans out there!

There’s no shortage of movies set to be released in 2024, but the animation genre is particularly exciting. With blockbusters like “Inside Out 2” and family favorites such as “Despicable Me 4,” animation has been dominating the box office recently. Upcoming releases including “The Wild Robot” promise to keep this trend going.

Instead of saying “But, I’m already looking at the next few years because now Shrek 5 is going to be a part of it,” you could paraphrase as “I’m excitedly looking forward to the coming years since Shrek 5 is in production, and I can hardly wait to find out who will be in it and when we’ll get to see this anticipated sequel.”

What Is The Shrek 5 Release Date?

Shrek 5: What We Know So Far About The Long-Awaited Installment

DreamWorks Animation announced on their social media platform, previously known as Twitter, that the fifth installment of Shrek, titled “Shrek 5,” is scheduled for release on July 1, 2026.

As someone who has been eagerly anticipating this film for over ten years, I can’t hide my excitement that we finally have a confirmation and release date! Although it would be ideal for the movie to hit theaters in 2025, given how long I’ve waited, two more years seems like a reasonable price to pay. My patience has been tested through various setbacks and delays, but the prospect of finally seeing this masterpiece come to life is worth the wait. Let’s cherish this moment and look forward to experiencing the magic on the big screen!

In more relaxed and conversational terms: It’s been quite some time – around fifteen years to be exact – since we last saw our favorite ogre Shrek, along with Fiona, Donkey, and the rest of the gang in a new adventure together. The most recent film, “Shrek Forever After,” came out back in 2010, followed by spin-offs featuring Puss in Boots. With such a long wait, I have a strong feeling that fans will be thrilled to have Shrek and his friends back for another heartwarming and hilarious adventure.

The Shrek 5 Cast

The film’s production is confirmed, and according to recent news shared in the X post, three past Shrek cast members are set to return for the fifth installment. Specifically, these actors are:

Mike Myers as Shrek

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with you all! Mike Myers, the brilliant comedian known for bringing Shrek’s ogre voice to life, is set to return for Shrek 5. With an illustrious career spanning decades, Myers has left us in stitches through iconic roles like Wayne in “Wayne’s World,” Austin Powers, and the Cat in the Hat. Though he’s been a bit more low-key lately, recent appearances include films like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Amsterdam.” So get ready for another hilarious adventure with everyone’s favorite ogre!

However, to hear that Myers is going to be back to voice Shrek makes me so freaking happy.

Eddie Murphy as Donkey

Eddie Murphy has experienced a comeback in his acting career recently after taking a short break. Notably, he has been featured in some noteworthy movies such as “Dolemite Is My Name” and “Coming 2 America,” as well as the acclaimed Netflix production “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.”

Currently, it’s been revealed that he will be back to voice Donkey, a character from my childhood memories whose voice I deeply cherish. I believe Donkey’s distinctive voice was instrumental in igniting my fondness for waffles during my early years.

Surprisingly, Murphy has already finished voice recordings for Shrek 5 as he revealed in an interview with Collider. He disclosed that he had recorded the initial act, and it seems there will be a standalone Donkey film as well.

Approximately five months ago, we began working on the new Shrek project. I handled the recording of the first act, and we plan to complete it this year. Shrek and Donkey will each have their own movies. We’ll produce a film for Shrek, and separately, we’ll create one for Donkey.

So now I’m even more excited. Thank you.

Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona

The person we’re expecting to return next is Cameron Diaz, portraying the fiercest ogre-princess Princess Fiona. Her character was a role model for me growing up. Diaz took a break from acting a few years ago, but she returned to the industry in 2022 with the film “Back in Action.” Now, she’s set to appear in “Shrek 5,” bringing me great joy as I’ve longed to see her return to this beloved role.

Starting from July 2024, no other actors have been officially announced for the film, leaving Antonio Banderas’ participation as Puss in question. Nevertheless, given the success and positive response to the “Puss in Boots” series, it seems unlikely that he won’t reprise his role for “Shrek 5.”

What Is The Shrek 5 Story?

Shrek 5: What We Know So Far About The Long-Awaited Installment

Certainly, It’s clear that we’re in the dark about what Shrek 5 might bring. The previous film saw Shrek being deceived into agreeing to a contract with Rumpelstiltskin, who subsequently used sorcery to reverse Shrek’s life and family, making it seem as if he had never met or fallen for Fiona.

The movie was a hit, just like all the previous Shrek films. however, we can’t predict what will come next with certainty. Of course, Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey will be part of it since they are set to return. But the storyline could draw from any other fairytale for its inspiration.

Being a longtime fan of the Shrek franchise, I’m thrilled to hear that a Donkey spinoff film is in the works! As someone who has grown up with these beloved characters, I can’t help but feel excited about the possibilities this new addition brings.

Walt Dohrn Will Direct Shrek 5

As a longtime fan of the Shrek franchise, I’m thrilled to learn that Walt Dohrn will be taking the helm as the director of Shrek 5. With his extensive background in the series, it’s clear that he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. Having provided the voice for Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek Forever After and contributed to the voice work for several other characters in Shrek the Third, Dohrn has already left an indelible mark on this magical world.

Brad Abelson and this individual have collaborated on various DreamWorks Animation projects beyond just “Madagascar” and the acclaimed yet less recognized “Rise of the Guardians,” as well as “The Boss Baby.” Notably, the former served as the director for all three installments of the popular “Trolls” series. Given their impressive track record and DreamWorks Animation’s success with these films, I have confidence in their abilities. According to Variety, Brad Abelson will also be sharing co-directing duties with this person.

Michael McCullers is set to pen the script, as reported by CNN. He has collaborated with Myers on the “Austin Powers” movie franchise and has contributed to scripts for other DreamWorks Animation productions.

Writing about God’s plan leaves me longing for the release of Shrek 5. The wait is now two years, which feels unbearable. I guess I’ll just have to be patient and rewatch all the Shrek movies in the meantime.
