Rings Of Power Season 2 Reveals Two New Lord Of The Rings Characters - Exclusive

As a seasoned gamer and an avid fan of “The Lord of the Rings,” I am thrilled to learn about the addition of two new characters for “The Rings of Power” Season 2. The announcement that Calam Lynch will play Camnir, an expert elven map-maker from Eriador, and Selina Lo as Rían, a skilled elven archer from Lindon, has me buzzing with excitement.

Looper is thrilled to unveil exclusive new details about “The Rings of Power” Season 2: Calam Lynch (“Dunkirk,” “Bridgerton”) joins the cast as Camnir, an elven cartographer hailing from Eriador. Furthermore, Selina Lo (“Hellraiser,” “Boss Level”) will bring elven archer Rían to life in Lindon. Insider information suggests that both characters play significant roles in Elrond’s (Robert Aramayo) narrative for the upcoming season.

In the intricate lore of Middle-earth’s “Rings of Power” saga, J.R.R. Tolkien left many details unexplored concerning this era. Nonetheless, as we progress into Season 2, it is clear that the remaining Rings will be crafted imminently (we were introduced to only the Three Elven Rings in Season 1, and more are anticipated in Season 2). Drawing from Tolkien’s fragmented Second Age accounts, we learn that Sauron will make an attempt to seize Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) and his elven blacksmiths in Eregion, situated near Khazad-dûm, by employing force.

In the “Unfinished Tales” book by Tolkien, he describes an event where Gil-galad, the elven king, learns about an assault. Upon hearing this news, he orders Elrond Half-elven to lead a force and respond. The phrase “far to go” implies a long journey, which in this context means hundreds of miles across the expansive region of Eriador in Middle-earth’s western side. Once Elrond arrives at Eregion with his troops, he gathers local elves as they progress. Although we won’t delve into the story’s spoilers, Lo and Lynch’s characters are expected to provide an immersive perspective of the entire event from a ground-level viewpoint.

Rían is one of the best archers this side of the Misty Mountains

As an excited fan, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I heard Selina Lo had joined “The Rings of Power” cast so soon after the first season finale! However, details about her character remained a mystery until now. Introducing Rían, a new elf character created specifically for the Second Age adaptation by showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. From what I’ve gathered, Rían is an extraordinary archer hailing from Lindon, and she’s one of Elrond’s newly formed band of warrior-elves. Her bravery and sharp aim will undoubtedly be crucial in the upcoming battles for Eregion.

The bit about a recently formed band of warrior-elves could be in reference to Tolkien’s description of Elrond gathering fresh forces as he approaches Sauron’s armies. Then again, this could reference a group Elrond commands before he’s sent out to Eregion. In that case, it would be a creative addition to the story specific to the series as it transitions Elrond from a young elven diplomat in Season 1 into a warrior in Season 2.

During the Second Age of “The Lord of the Rings” story, Elrond serves as a military leader instead of just providing counsel, as he is younger and less experienced at that time. It’s worth noting that Elrond will eventually be present when Isildur cuts the One Ring from Sauron’s hand in battle, as depicted in Peter Jackson’s “The Fellowship of the Ring” opening sequence. This implies that Elrond is preparing for war. Introducing Rían, a skilled archer hailing from Elrond’s home region of Lindon and a part of his personal band of warrior-elves, could make her an essential character not just in Season 2 but also in future developments.

Camnir’s cartographic skills make him invaluable to Elrond

Rían hails from the strong elven realm of Lindon, as established in “The Rings of Power”. In contrast, Calam Lynch’s character background isn’t explicitly stated. His role is described thus: an accomplished elven cartographer, proficient in navigating Eriador’s forests. When an unexpected peril forces them to seek a new route to Eregion, Camnir’s courage will be challenged as Elrond’s band of elf warriors faces an unanticipated assault on their journey: The Barrow-wights.

Camnir can be described as an accomplished elven map-maker deeply familiar with Eriador. His elven identity remains unspecified, leaving room for him to belong to various elven groups residing in this region during the Second Age: Noldor (High Elves), Sindar (Grey-elves), Laiquendi (Light-elves), or Nandor (Wood-elves). The specific elven background of Camnir is not delved into here, but it’s worth noting that each group could shape his role in the narrative.

An intriguing aspect is the relationship between the Barrow-wights. These creepy creatures have not been depicted on screen before, and “The Rings of Power” will be their debut. Following a line from Lindon to Eregion on the Middle-earth map leads directly through the Barrow Downs, which are their habitat during the Third Age. Given that Camnir is expected to act as Elrond’s cartographer and guide in Eriador, it seems logical for him to assist in navigating an area infested with Barrow-wights near the well-known burial mounds from “The Lord of the Rings.”

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 debuts on August 29 on Prime Video.
