As a huge fan of classic comedy, I am deeply saddened by the news of Bob Newhart’s passing at the age of 94. Known for his deadpan humor and iconic stammer, Newhart had an uncanny ability to make me laugh with his two sitcom shows and Emmy Award-winning performances in shows like “The Big Bang Theory.”

The actors in “Elf” brought incredible comedic skills that made this Christmas movie a delight to remember. We had Will Ferrell portraying Buddy, a human brought up at the North Pole, Bob Newhart as Papa Elf who took Buddy in, and Zooey Deschanel as Jovie, who developed feelings for Buddy. In my opinion, the most talented actors are exceptionally selfless individuals. He was an extraordinarily kind, humorous man, neither conceited nor self-absorbed. Instead, he radiated kindness, sweetness, and warmth during our collaborations.
Zooey Deschanel was likely elated to collaborate with the gifted Bob Newhart in the film “Elf.” In this beloved production, Newhart brilliantly depicted Papa Elf, who warmly welcomed Buddy and smuggled him into Santa’s sack from the orphanage. Papa Elf bestowed love upon Buddy and taught him valuable elf skills to effectively run Santa’s sleigh.
Although it’s debatable that Papa Elf should have revealed Buddy’s true origins earlier, I wouldn’t want to miss having him as my Christmas movie dad. On the other hand, Walter Hobbs, Buddy’s biological father, initially struggled with his son’s holiday enthusiasm and peculiarities. However, Papa Elf showed nothing but affection and acceptance towards his adopted son throughout.
Bob Newhart’s affection for Papa Elf was evident as he agreed to revive his famous character for a Kentucky Lottery TV commercial. In this spot, Newhart once more put on the iconic green-and-white elf costume and led a group discussion about potential Christmas presents. Witnessing Newhart wear the Papa Elf outfit once again is an instant mood-lifter.
Many celebrities, including Zooey Deschanel’s contemporaries Mark Hamill and Mayim Bialick, honored the late Bob Newhart by sharing heartfelt tributes.
