Garry's Mod Successor is Now Playable After Years of Development

As a long-time fan and avid gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement as I witness the development of Sandbox, the upcoming title from Facepunch Studios that seems to be a spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod. I still remember the first time I played Garry’s Mod back in 2006, and it quickly became one of my all-time favorite games. The unique physics engine, endless possibilities for creative expression, and the community of players that built around it made it a truly special experience.

Starting from its debut in 2004, Garry’s Mod has remained a distinguished game on Steam, even though its player base is not as large as before. With daily active users numbering in the tens of thousands, this game continues to captivate audiences through beloved modes such as DarkRP and Prop Hunt.

Although Garry’s Mod on PC remains an enjoyable game for players, Facepunch Studios’ upcoming project is seen as a significant follow-up in many ways. Whereas Garry’s Mod introduced iconic memes like the Skibidi Toilet dance, this new title appears to merge elements of the fan-favorite game with Roblox. Users are expected to have the ability to create their own games within an expansive Sandbox setting.

Title “Sandbox” (stylized as s&box), an anticipated follow-up to Garry’s Mod, has been under development since 2015, primarily focusing on virtual reality technology using top VR headsets. Initially started in Unreal Engine, the developer later opted for Source 2, which is the advanced version of Valve’s Source engine that both Garry’s Mod and Sandbox share a history with. After nearly a decade, Sandbox is now accessible to players.

To gain access to the latest version of the game in development, you should visit the Sandbox developer preview site and log in using your Steam account. After signing up for the preview program by clicking the image, the game will automatically be added to your Steam library.

Certainly, as a developer preview, the game isn’t at its finest. Several user-generated and developer-created game modes could be faulty or glitchy. However, this is our first chance to experience what appears to be the successor to Garry’s Mod after an extended period of anticipation for many, including myself.

It’s anticipated that s&box won’t take much longer to be available for a wider audience. After twenty years of playing and observing Garry’s Mod being appreciated by various gamers, it would be quite appropriate if s&box launched around the time of the original mod’s 20th anniversary.
