As a long-time comic book fan and creator with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia as I reflect on Rob Liefeld‘s latest journey with Deadpool and Wolverine. The news that Marvel Studios had been considering unconventional characters like Dogpool for the upcoming film was music to my ears.
A few years ago, during San Diego Comic-Con, Rob Liefeld, the creator of Deadpool, had an intriguing conversation with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. He shared some exciting news about the upcoming but still secretive Deadpool 3 project.
Feige shared with Liefeld that his desk was then filled with the writer-artist’s projects, particularly the Deadpool Corps – an eccentric team of Deadpool alter egos, such as Dogpool (a canine version) and Ladypool (female). This was Liefeld’s initial hint that these quirky characters might make an appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” where Peggy, a Pug-Chinese Crested mix and the former winner of Britain’s Ugliest Dog Contest, makes her breakout character debut.
“After speaking with Feige, I became strongly drawn to the idea of Dogpool. I believed that Dogpool represented a new and exciting stage beyond Groot and Rocket Raccoon. Moreover, I enthusiastically expressed that the potential merchandise sales made it a worthwhile endeavor.”
Last year, I received another intriguing hint concerning Deadpool and Wolverine from Marvel’s business affairs team. They contacted me to share the news of an easter egg in their production. In one particular scene, you’ll notice an orthopedic store named “Liefeld’s Just Feet.” This is a delightful wink to an infamous internet joke targeting the way Rob Liefeld illustrates feet. As a dedicated gamer and avid comic book fan, I found this little detail quite amusing and engaging.
“Liefeld recounts, ‘I burst out laughing uncontrollably when Marvel’s business team contacted me on the phone.’ They joined in the laughter as well.”
In Deadpool 2 (released in 2018), Domino, played by Zazie Beetz, makes a jab at Rob Liefeld’s infamous drawing of feet. Previously, in the 2016 film that initiated the series, Liefeld himself was depicted sitting at a bar.
More recently, Liefeld journeyed to New York for the premiere of the new film, where he not only got to see the movie but also explored some attractions. He stayed at The Langham New York Fifth Avenue Hotel during his visit. For Liefeld, the new “Deadpool & Wolverine” production is a significant milestone in the development of the character, and it aligns with an important transition in his long-term collaboration with Wade Wilson. In fact, this film release coincides with Liefeld’s retirement from writing and illustrating Deadpool comics, marking the beginning of a new series, “Deadpool Team-Up,” which will be released next month.
As a gamer, I’ve reached a point where I have exhausted all possible dialogue for my character in this current adventure. This new storyline is so unexpected and unlike anything I’ve attempted before. It’s not about trying to be edgy or making my character stand out. Instead, it’s an oddball tale that resonates with me, and I believe it fits perfectly into the game’s narrative.
