As a huge fan of Friends, I can’t help but appreciate the depth and complexity of the supporting characters that made this iconic sitcom so beloved. Among them is Ross Geller’s ex-wife Carol Willick, who played a significant role in his life. While Anita Barone introduced us to Carol in the second episode of Friends, her tenure on the show was short-lived as she chose to pursue other opportunities after appearing only once.
Without a doubt, “Friends” stands out among sitcoms for its excellence. To create an effective ensemble, however, it was essential to develop compelling characters for Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, and Joey to engage with. A significant figure in Ross’ life and a cherished secondary character on “Friends” was his ex-wife Carol Willick.
In the first episode of the show, we discovered that Carol and Ross got divorced when Carol revealed she was gay. Despite their split, the ex-couple remained connected in some way. However, as you may have noticed, two different actresses portrayed the character of Carol on “Friends.” Here’s an explanation for why Anita Barone was eventually replaced by Jane Sibbett.
Why Anita Barone Only Played Carol For One Episode
In the initial episode, Ross (David Schwimmer) established his relationship with Carol (Anita Barone), but she made her first appearance in Episode 2, titled “The One with the Sonogram at the End.” During this episode, Carol informed Ross at his museum job that she was pregnant with his child, causing intricate feelings and a funny scene at the doctor’s office involving Schwimmer, Barone, and Jessica Hecht, who portrayed Carol’s lover Susan. Unfortunately, Barone did not reappear on “Friends” after this episode.
I’ve always been a big fan of Anita Barone’s acting skills, and according to what I’ve read in Express (UK), after her appearance in a particular episode of Friends, she decided it was time to pursue bigger opportunities elsewhere. She eventually joined The Jeff Foxworthy Show, playing the role of Karen, Foxworthy’s wife. However, when the show moved from ABC to NBC after its first season, Barone was replaced by Ann Cusack in that role. Despite this setback, she has continued to make guest appearances on various shows up until as recently as 2023.
How Jane Sibbett Turned Carol Into A Recurring Character
I can’t help but find it amusing how Ross from “Friends” ended up with an additional wife through the casting process. The writers hadn’t planned for Ross to have three divorces when they hired Jane Sibbett to replace Anita Barone as Carol Willick in Season 1. Sibbett made her first appearance towards the end of the first season and continued to appear in at least one episode for the subsequent seven seasons.
In the “Back to the Best” podcast interview in 2023, Jane Sibbett shared that her initial role was only for two episodes. However, after her performance in “The One with the Candy Hearts,” showrunner Marta Kauffman appreciated her contribution to the character and chose to broaden the part instead.
As a seasoned actor with years of experience under my belt, I can relate to the unique dynamic between Jess [Hecht] and myself on the set of our show. We were often cast as the “straight men” to David Schwimmer’s comedic performances, adding depth and reality to his characters. However, in this particular instance, I wasn’t just playing it for laughs. Instead, I was pouring my heart into every scene, investing it with genuine emotion that Jess found so compelling she wanted it included in the show.
Jane Sibbett made 15 appearances on “Friends” throughout its 10-season run. During this time, she gained significant prominence in LGBTQ+ representation in media. Notably, her character Carol Willick married Susan Bunch in Season 2, marking the first lesbian wedding depicted on television.
It’s been pondered by some that Anita Barone may regret giving up her part in what eventually turned into an enormously successful show. However, Jane Sibbett reminded us that her role was initially meant for just three episodes, so it’s understandable that Barone aimed for bigger opportunities.
