As a longtime Marvel fan, I can’t help but be excited about the brief yet intriguing appearance of the Hulk in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Although Avengers cameos were scarce in this wild ride across realities, that fleeting moment when Deadpool encounters the big green monster left me with many questions.
In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” you’ll recognize many familiar faces, but when the Avengers drop by to check on Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), they’re surprisingly few and far between. Except for a poignant goodbye from Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in a future scene that Deadpool catches a glimpse of, and the briefest appearance of an angry Avenger, the Hulk, in an over-shoulder shot – it might not even be the one we’re accustomed to.
While exploring various timelines in search of an ideal Logan version for Wade, he encounters an individual sporting a brown suit based on John Byrne’s renowned design, but without the mask, reminiscent of Todd McFarlane’s “Incredible Hulk” #340 cover. Before Wade could negotiate with this Wolverine and persuade him to abandon his reality for Deadpool’s assignment, however, the Hulk suddenly emerged, snatching Wade up and hurling him back through the portal to his origin point.
Historically, Marvel Comics has featured many incarnations of the Hulk, some filled with rage and others tinged with green hues, leaving us pondering which one is being referred to here. However, we’ll keep that revelation a secret for now, dear readers. Our curiosity remains unsated.
Deadpool had his first Hulk encounter with a savage Ruffalo
In a quick and fleeting appearance, it’s reasonable to assume that the Hulk we witnessed was indeed a version of Mark Ruffalo’s Jade Giant, recognized by fans since 2012. The green hue and size of the figure exclude the possibility of it being Edward Norton’s Hulk from “The Incredible Hulk” (2008) or Eric Bana’s character in Ang Lee’s film from 2003. Moreover, this Hulk seemed to be in his enraged, mindless state rather than the intelligent and merged persona displayed in “Avengers: Endgame.”
The Hulk’s rage isn’t the only factor at play here; it’s also significant that Wolverine and he have a long history of conflict. Some viewers might be surprised by this confrontation, but comic book enthusiasts are aware that these two characters have a lengthy past. The brawl that Wilson gets dragged into is a reference to various key moments in Wolverine’s background, not just his suit design and Todd McFarlane’s famous cover, but also his first appearance in Marvel Comics. Before joining the X-Men, Logan made his mark in “Incredible Hulk” #180 by challenging the mighty Hulk, the Avenger of Earth’s greatest strength.
Over the past few years, this duo has clashed multiple times. However, is another confrontation between them on the horizon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? According to Hugh Jackman, the answer is a definite yes if he has his way.
Hugh Jackman is itching for a fight with The Hulk
“Deadpool & Wolverine” might well have appeased fans in giving them what they want, but one essential encounter that still needs to be properly done before it can be checked off the list is Logan and the Hulk sharing the screen again, and for more than a few seconds. Hugh Jackman is keen for it to happen as well. After being probed by Screen Rant about Wade and Logan’s potential Marvel Cinematic Universe future, the actor was asked who he’d like his character to cross paths with. Jackman responded by naming Bruce Banner’s alter-ego as the dream confrontation he wants to shoot. “I don’t know how we do it,” he said, “but because this is where he first appeared, I always thought Hulk, and I’m terrified of how that will feel as the actor, I’d just get flown around.”
Jackman’s stance towards working with Ruffalo appeared different in the past. In 2020, he confidently spoke to ComicBook.com about facing off against the Hulk actor’s volatile companion. “I think he is one of the best actors, definitely of our generation…. But Wolverine would defeat him, no question.” With the unpredictable and bizarre turn the franchise has taken (we’re referring to you, Downey Jr.’s Victor Von Doom), it remains uncertain if this encounter will materialize. It’s essential to stay prepared with sharp claws and oversized purple pants, just in case things go awry.
