The Fantastic Four Director Clears Up One Marvel Misconception About His Upcoming MCU Movie

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I’ve been following the MCU’s multiverse adventures with bated breath. The latest surprise came when Doctor Strange encountered the Illuminati from another universe in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” The team was an intriguing mix of familiar faces like Peggy Carter and Captain Marvel, but also newcomers such as Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier and John Krasinski’s Reed Richards. However, it seems we’re not done exploring the multiverse just yet!

As a gamer, I’ve been on the edge of my seat watching Marvel Studios explore the Multiverse in their movies and shows. The real jaw-dropper came when Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) encountered the Illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This unexpected group included Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch), Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), and one version of Reed Richards from The Fantastic Four. But get this, we’re about to meet an entirely new version of The Fantastic Four in Matt Shakman’s movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps, hitting theaters in July 2025. However, don’t count on them recognizing any other MCU superheroes.

After an explosive reveal at Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con presentation in Hall H – with Robert Downey Jr. confirmed to rejoin the MCU as Doctor Doom – TopMob interviewed The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman. During our conversation, we inquired about the alternate reality where The Fantastic Four live, hinted at in promotional materials and displayed during the presentation. With multiple MCU projects introducing us to parallel Earths, we asked Shakman if this world hosts versions of other Marvel superheroes. He explained clearly:

This is extraordinary because we get to create an entirely new cosmos with no other superheroes in sight. It’s just the Fantastic Four.

Tracking which Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) hero variants have interacted with one another has proven to be a challenge due to the complex timeline(s) established by the series. For instance, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) met Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) in the Quantum Realm and asked if he had killed him in another reality. Furthermore, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), known for his witty banter and disregard for rules, appeared in “Deadpool & Wolverine” alongside Wolverine, though I won’t reveal how they teamed up to avoid spoiling the movie for those uninitiated.

Fans are curious about how the Fantastic Four, comprised of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joe Quinn, and Eben Moss-Bachrach, could move from their world to the Sacred Timeline, also known as Earth-616 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With the increasing interplay between timelines, it’s clear that the Fantastic Four can join the MCU. The real question now is why they would do so. Is it due to Galactus consuming their planet? Or perhaps they bring a warning with them? Alternatively, could the imminent arrival of a new Doctor Doom compel the Fantastic Four to make this transition urgently?

Currently, due to Matt Shakman’s revelation, it is clear that when the Fantastic Four arrive on Earth-616, they won’t be familiar with any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s heroes as alternate versions of their previous friends from another reality.
