As a seasoned gamer and animation enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I am thrilled to hear about Chris Sanders’ latest project, “The Wild Robot.” Having grown up watching his work in classics like “Lilo & Stitch,” it’s heartening to see him return to the animated world with a fresh and innovative take.

Chris Sanders, co-director of the successful “How to Train Your Dragon” film series, aims to create a new animated sensation at DreamWorks through his upcoming project named “The Wild Robot.”

As a movie critic with a strong background in literature and a soft spot for adaptations of beloved books, I am thrilled to share my perspective on the upcoming film based on Peter Brown’s bestselling novel. Having attended this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I had the privilege of speaking with Kit Connor, the talented young actor who plays Brightbill in this production.

As the conscious robot, voiced by Pedro Pascal, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, and other renowned actors, integrates deeper into nature and forms bonds with diverse animal species, Roz undergoes a transformation in her appearance. In an SDCC panel, where Sanders, the film’s writer and director, joined several cast members including Roz herself, he elaborated on the movie’s artistic style and visual approach.

The Wild Robot Director Breaks Down Animation Style for New DreamWorks Film

The filmmaker reminisced about inquiring from our production designer, Raymond Zibach, “How much can we push it? Could we maybe extend our inspirational paintings to our movie? Is there a chance that our film could resemble the original paintings we started with?” recalled the director who kick-started his career on several Disney classics like Lilo & Stitch. “These loose, almost impressionistic, paintings. To what extent can we emulate them? To my astonishment, they managed to reach that point completely. Consequently, the entire film has a painted look. It’s worth mentioning that the only computer-generated aspect is Roz at the start… Roz’s exterior is the only traditional CG element in the movie. As she spends more time on the island, her surface will be replaced by brush strokes. Thus, by the end of the film, she has a completely painted surface, just like every environment, sky, tree, and other character. In essence, she becomes part of the island.”
