As a die-hard fan of NCIS for over a decade, I can confidently say that Austin Stowell’s portrayal of young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in “NCIS: Origins” is nothing short of impressive. The anticipation among fans has been building up since the announcement of the prequel series, and seeing Stowell step into the iconic role of Gibbs is truly a sight to behold.
Fans are thrilled to get a peek at Austin Stowell in costume as Leroy Jethro Gibbs for “NCIS: Origins.” Although Mark Harmon will always be the iconic Gibbs in many people’s minds, Stowell’s transformation has generated widespread excitement. Instagram users have flooded his account with positive comments about his new appearance.

As I scroll through the comments on Stowell’s latest post, I see familiar faces pop up – his friends and family. But with the growing buzz around him as Gibbs in NCIS: Origins, more and more fans are joining in. “I’m absolutely here for this!” exclaims martinigirl6979. “Gibbs’s current self and young Gibbs (fire emojis) have me hooked already!” adds itzellie.lucy with a double dose of excitement. Amyrotchford chimes in, “I can’t wait to see this! I’m a huge NCIS fan!” Comfortedbyfiction shares my enthusiasm, “So excited for NCIS: Origins!”
As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of NCIS, I can’t help but feel excited about the upcoming “Origins” spin-off that promises to delve deeper into Gibbs’ background and potentially uncover hidden secrets from the NCIS universe. However, there’s one nagging concern that refuses to let me fully embrace Stowell’s portrayal of Gibbs – his on-screen appearance just doesn’t quite live up to the image I have in my mind from watching the original series.
NCIS: Origins’ take on Gibb’s look might be slightly off
A single commenter on Austin Stowell’s Instagram post expressed their concern about his excessive hair for the role of Gibbs, suggesting a haircut would be necessary to accurately portray the character as he appeared in “NCIS: Origins” set in 1991. (hcoll20000 remarked,) “This actor’s hairstyle is too long for Gibbs in this image; a haircut would help him better embody the character.” This observation holds weight as Gibbs’ signature short haircut is a notable aspect of his on-screen persona during that time.
As a devoted fan, I found myself utterly stunned when, in the Season 3 finale titled “Hiatus,” Leroy Jethro Gibbs underwent an extraordinary transformation. He had completely erased every memory he’d made since 1991! In disbelief, he opted to sport a military-style jarhead haircut – sides buzzed short and clean – which seemed to be the look he donned during the timeframe of the new show, quite unlike his usual appearance as portrayed in “Origins.”
1. In fairness to the hair and makeup crew of “NCIS: Origins” who have previously showcased Stowell’s makeover on their Instagram account, there’s a good chance that Gibbs adopts the hairstyle shown in the photo during the 1990s. Since the new style is noticeably shorter than Stowell’s previous look, it seems plausible that the show will rectify this continuity issue eventually. For now, though, it appears that Gibbs will be keeping his hair a bit longer on top.
