Tim Allen Comedy ‘Shifting Gears’ Nabs Series Order at ABC

As a long-time fan and avid gamer of sitcoms, I couldn’t be more excited about Tim Allen‘s return to ABC! The news that he will star in “Shifting Gears” as a widower with a classic car restoration business, and have his adult daughter and teenage kids move back in, sounds like a perfect recipe for another hit show. I fondly remember the golden era of television when Allen starred in “Home Improvement,” which was a staple of my childhood. And who could forget “Last Man Standing”? I followed him through six great seasons on ABC before it moved to Fox for its final three installments.

Tim Allen is officially returning to ABC.

ABC has officially ordered a comedy series called “Shifting Gears” for production, which stars Allen as a widowed classic car business owner. His adult daughter (Kat Dennings) and teenage children have moved back in with him. This marks Allen’s comeback to ABC after the success of his previous shows, “Home Improvement” in the 1990s and “Last Man Standing” for six seasons before it was transferred to Fox for its final episodes.

The production of the series continues, but Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully (creators of ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Duncanville’), who oversaw the pilot episode, have left ‘Shifting Gears’. Reports indicate that their departure was friendly, and they will be acknowledged as executive producers for the pilot. They still maintain a professional relationship with ‘Shifting Gears’ producer 20th Television. A replacement showrunner is expected to be appointed shortly.

Together with Allen and Dennings, the show includes Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis as part of its cast.

Allen executes the production of the show in collaboration with Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, and John Pasquin, who directs the pilot. The Scullys serve as executive producers during the making of the pilot episode.

Shifting Gears is one of two comedy pilots featuring former ABC stars that the network developed during the 2024-25 cycle. A decision on the second, Forgive and Forget starring Modern Family’s Ty Burrell, is expected in the near future.

ABC’s lineup of comedies features shows like “Abbott Elementary,” set to debut its fourth season this fall, and the last season of “The Conners,” scheduled for early 2025.
