23 years ago, I was just a young gamer, eagerly awaiting my first taste of console FPS gaming with Halo: Combat Evolved. Little did I know that this game would not only captivate me but also shape the entire landscape of console shooters for years to come. Now, as an experienced gamer who has played countless hours of Halo and other FPS games, I am beyond excited to see a potential remake of this iconic title.
343 Industries, the developers behind Halo: Combat Evolved (initially released in 2001), are rumored to be remaking this classic game once more. After the release of the Combat Evolved Anniversary version in 2011, it seems they’re now preparing a fresh take on the original Xbox hit for Xbox Series, PC, and notably, PlayStation 5 as well.
1. Based on reliable sources pointing towards Halo: Combat Evolved’s revival for PlayStation, it’s crucial that this modern take goes beyond simple remastering and instead offers a comprehensive overhaul, captivating a fresh wave of Halo enthusiasts who may not have been enthralled by the previous TV series. (A new audience that might have found the prior television show unimpressive.)
23 years ago, I can still remember the moment Halo: Combat Evolved set the bar for console FPS games. It’s still an amazing game today. But with all the progress made in level design, gunplay mechanics, and the rich narrative arc that Halo has built over the decades, this original story could use a significant script rewrite to truly shine in today’s gaming landscape.
1. Fundamentally, Halo: Combat Evolved remains a delightfully straightforward game, yet its simplicity continues to make it an enjoyable and user-friendly choice today. Bungie’s “30 seconds of fun” philosophy, which seamlessly blended firearms, grenades, and melee attacks, still results in some extraordinary combat sequences, the same principle that powers Destiny 2. The incorporation of vehicles in missions such as The Silent Cartographer and the epic Warthog Run remains as thrilling as gaming gets.
After the unveiling of Halo Infinite, which drew noticeable influence from its ancestor, it’s clear that the original Halo: Combat Evolved is growing old in certain aspects, surpassing the capabilities of a simple remaster. The dialogue and explanations can feel awkward at times, missions appear more compact than we recall, and the awe-inspiring moment of discovering the legendary Halo ring doesn’t resonate as powerfully as before.
An alternate rendition of Halo: Combat Evolved needn’t transform into an open-world game like Halo Infinite. Instead, it should preserve its level-based progression but with a more expansive design. For instance, the second mission, titled “Halo,” could offer increased exploration opportunities with the choice to save additional marines. Rather than rescuing allies and sending them on their way, you could amass a militia, which expands as you rescue more comrades. The infiltration of Truth and Reconciliation should incorporate extended stealth sequences, while The Silent Cartographer needs a significant expansion to recapture the sense of wonder it initially inspired in 2001.
1. Any adaptation of Halo: Combat Evolved must preserve its essence, including the distinctive art style that was recently revived in Halo Infinite. The air of mystery surrounding the game should also be maintained for both long-time fans and newcomers to experience the same captivating enigma that original fans felt over two decades ago.
1. Here are some instances in Halo Infinite where saving marines had real significance – a commendable aspect. Yet, the open-world design of Infinite made it overly simple to leap from location to location, often neglecting one’s crew, which was problematic. The absence of Halo’s characteristic cinematic sequencing throughout most of its gameplay was regrettable. A reboot of Halo: Combat Evolved could strike the ideal balance, blending the series’ iconic cinematic gameplay with open-ended exploration segments.

1. Additionally, a remake could potentially rectify some lingering lore discrepancies from the past two decades of novels, comics, and sequels. In truth, there are even lore inconsistencies between the original game and its novel prequel, Halo: The Fall of Reach.
As a longtime fan of the Halo series, I can’t help but reflect on how different Master Chief’s origin story could have been. You see, growing up, I always assumed that Master Chief was just an advanced soldier, with his iconic armor being a Mark V model. It wasn’t until much later that I discovered the rich backstory of him being a cyborg protagonist instead.
1st Person Perspective: As a hardcore Halo fan, I’ve noticed some intriguing plot inconsistencies across the games. In Halo: Combat Evolved, it was clear that the Covenant knew the Halo array was a weapon of mass destruction. However, in Halo 2 and the novel First Strike, they seemed to be unaware of the rings’ devastating effects on all sentient life. Additionally, there’s the confusing element about humanity and the Forerunners being potentially the same species in Combat Evolved, a notion that was later retconned as well. It’s fascinating how these story elements evolved over time!
In addition, it’s important to incorporate missing Covenant adversaries from the initial Halo games, such as the fierce Brutes, bothersome Drones, and tranquil Engineers, into any potential remake. Although there are explanations within the storyline for their absence at the Battle of Reach rather than Halo, these reasons are merely conveniences. Given that the Brutes have become the chief adversaries in the Halo universe, it’s crucial they play a part in a possible remake.
1. “Halo: Combat Evolved holds significant importance in gaming history, often serving as a benchmark for console shooters which were subsequently referred to as ‘Halo Killers.’ Although new contenders may not achieve this title again, Halo’s distinctive gameplay and expansive lore continue to captivate players. Titles like Halo: Epitaph and the upcoming Halo: Empty Throne further develop this universe, ensuring its enduring allure.”
1. Currently, updating Halo: Combat Evolved as a basic remaster seems unnecessary since we can either enjoy the original version or its Anniversary remaster on both Xbox and PC platforms. Instead, a comprehensive overhaul that breathes new life into the twenty-three-year-old shooter by incorporating a fresh script, a variety of adversaries, and the inclusion of ODSTs in combat would be an epic tribute to the series that helped establish Xbox’s reputation.
