Knight Lancer review - “Gallop on and sing the chivalry song”

As a long-time gamer and avid fan of retro games, I can’t help but be captivated by the allure of Knight Lancer. This game brings to life the dreams of every daydreamer who has ever pondered what it would be like to be a knight in medieval times, battling for justice and reclaiming what is rightfully ours.

“If there’s a quote from literature that speaks straight to the heart while being impactful, many would choose ‘To strive for an impossible dream! That’s my goal,’ which is the essence of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. For those who wonder about this thrilling, perilous medieval game in today’s world, Knight Lancer brings that fantasy to life as you begin as a knight struggling financially. After losing your land, you embark on a mission for vengeance to reclaim what is rightfully yours and resurrect chivalry through conflict.”

Yearning for more retro games of knightly proportions? Gallop on!

Your knight in shining armour

1. Once you’ve quickly reviewed the terms and conditions, you’ll be welcomed by a menu where you can personalize your character, including its appearance and gender. The exciting part begins when another menu appears, allowing you to design your character’s coat of arms with a high level of customization. You have the freedom to choose from over 40,000 unique combinations by adjusting the color, pattern, and emblem of your banner.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that my creative input doesn’t stop at this point. The magnificent caparison, embodying the two-toned hues of my heraldic design, is all mine to select. Furthermore, I’ll have the delightful responsibility of choosing among three splendid garnitures. Lastly, the horse’s coat color will also be under my command!

Joust till you drop

1. In battle, aim for two crucial areas on your opponent – their helmet and upper body, each with a set defense level that you must reduce to zero for victory. However, be mindful of the physics involved in positioning your lance correctly to avoid losing control due to the force of your charge.

Intriguingly, time seems to stand still during crucial confrontations, intensifying the tension – much like a Life-or-Death battle in Mortal Kombat. The stunning spectacle that follows is your opponent crumpling, reminiscent of a limp doll, on the opposite end of the arena.

In this game that is deeply passionate about knighthood, you can rely on it to provide you with authentic jousting matches that are fair and true to the original. Beginning from stage 2-1, you’ll be granted a shield which you can position on your body or helmet for extra safety. The final result will depend on the roll of the dice.

When I face an opponent in a battle, I sometimes come out victorious without taking any damage or deal a decisive blow. But I’ve found that holding the lance more firmly increases my chances of delivering a one-hit knockout. After defeating the boss of a level, I get the opportunity to enhance my defense for the next challenge.

1. After perfecting your skills in jousting, you’ll recognize that you’ve reached the final stage of the game. For the next 22 missions, gameplay will remain consistent with this format, with no exceptions. Enemies will have additional defense points to increase challenge, enhancing the overall experience. The online PvP battle serves as a suitable alternative for a rogue-lite mode. While it’s intriguing to think about the developer experimenting with different non-lethal methods to decide the winner of the game, such as through the verdict of the Ladies’ Court, that would add an interesting twist.

What really elevated this game into a memorable experience was its outstanding retro-inspired soundtrack. Throughout the various levels and leading up to the boss battles, catchy 8-bit melodies with hints of medieval music took me back to A Knight in Camelot from time to time during matches, which added a nice touch.

As a gamer, I absolutely love the lively crowd in the background, adding depth and excitement to the experience for me. And the clean, uncluttered interface with its charming wooden icons is the cherry on top, making each interaction feel smooth and satisfying.
