Rob Lowe Confirms That a St. Elmo's Fire Legacy Sequel Is in the Works

As a child of the ’80s, I can vividly recall the days when the Brat Pack ruled the silver screen. With posters adorning my walls and wardrobes filled with similar fashion statements, I was an ardent fan of this iconic group of actors. So, hearing about the potential legacy sequel to “St. Elmo’s Fire” has me both excited and hesitant.

Due to the recent Hulu documentary “Brats,” the Brat Pack, the well-known team of ’80s actors such as Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, and Emilio Estevez, have experienced a surge in popularity once again. For those who fondly remember their posters on the wall and dressed like these cinematic rebels, their admiration for this band of outcasts never waned. However, it’s the renewed excitement that, as suggested by Lowe, could potentially result in a follow-up to “St. Elmo’s Fire” if all circumstances align favorably.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Lowe shared that plans for a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel with the original cast are underway, but he emphasized that it’s still in its infancy and very much open-ended.

Based on my own experiences and understanding of the situation, I believe that what we’re dealing with here is a nascent project or idea. The fact that it’s in its infancy is unmistakable, and I personally don’t feel comfortable sharing too many details at this point. All I can confirm is that it holds promise and warrants further exploration.

As someone who grew up in the 1980s, I can tell you that the term “Brat Pack” brings back a mix of nostalgia and cringeworthy memories. Having watched “Brats” on Hulu recently, I was reminded that not all members of this iconic group were willing to revisit their past.

Do We Really Need Another Brat Pack Movie?

I’ve been around the block a few times in this business, and I’ve seen my fair share of nostalgia-driven projects that didn’t quite hit the mark. And while I get it, really I do, another Brat Pack movie, especially one based on “St. Elmo’s Fire,” just doesn’t seem necessary to me. Don’t get me wrong, I have fond memories of the original film, but let’s be real, it wasn’t exactly a critical darling (it currently holds a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes).

Although St. Elmo’s Fire boasts the largest gathering of Brat Pack actors in a single movie, it’s often not the film critics favor most when looking back. The one movie fans tend to revisit time and again is The Breakfast Club. Despite its questionable aspects that haven’t held up well over time, wouldn’t it be intriguing to know what happened to John Bender (Nelson) and Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald)? Did their relationship endure? Probably not. How about Andrew Clark (Estevez) and Allison Reynolds (Sheedy)? Did they manage to stay together? We’d like to believe so. We also enjoy fantasizing that somewhere, Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall) still has someone’s stash hidden in his underwear. It’s worth noting that Anthony Michael Hall himself has suggested a legacy sequel for the movie.

Although another Brat Pack film might not be essential, it’d still be delightful to catch up with The Breakfast Club gang instead of St. Elmo’s Fire crew, but realistically, such a scenario seems unlikely. The actors share a rich history, marked by both positive and negative experiences. Regardless of what Sony and Lowe claim about the project, we find it hard to believe that the movie will materialize. If it does, it’s probable that not all original cast members may participate.
