As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast, who’s had the privilege of witnessing the magic unfold right before my eyes, I can confidently say that Mark Hamill‘s enthusiasm for DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot” strikes a chord deep within me. Having experienced the electrifying moment when a galaxy far, far away first captivated audiences in 1977, I find myself drawn to the anticipation and excitement that surrounds this new venture.
A forthcoming DreamWorks Animation film featuring actor Mark Hamill sees him reflecting on a past movie set in a distant galaxy.
Over the weekend, a San Diego Comic-Con panel centered around director Chris Sanders’ movie, “The Wild Robot”. In this film, Roz (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o), a robot stranded on a secluded island after a shipwreck, embarks on a series of adventures as she learns to bond with the local animals. The character Thorn, a fierce grizzly bear, is voiced by Mark Hamill. He discovered “The Wild Robot” after reading the beloved children’s book by Peter Brown, which was published in 2016 and captivated young readers with its heartwarming tale and stunning artwork.
“Hamill expressed, ‘If the movie even managed a tiny fraction of the impact this book has,’ he shared with the audience, who will be able to see it in theaters starting September 20th. And let me tell you, they’ve truly done an exceptional job.'”
The actor, accompanied by Nyong’o, Sanders, and voice artist Kit Connor, expressed that the current project evoked the same initial sentiments he felt towards the 1977 film “Star Wars,” where he initially embodied the legendary character of Luke Skywalker.
“Hamill finds The Wild Robot remarkably similar to describing Star Wars before people saw it, he said. It’s rich and luxurious, it’s emotionally moving, and it resonates on multiple levels. Kids will adore it, and so will the entire family.”
Besides Hamill, the talented voice acting lineup also features Nyong’o, Connor, Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, and Catherine O’Hara.
Last month at the Annecy Animation Festival in France, I had the privilege of attending a panel for “The Wild Robot”. During this event, Sanders showcased an array of captivating footage that left the audience on their feet with a thunderous applause. As we cheered, Sanders shared his aspiration for the film – to embody “analog warmth and soul”.
