The recurring joke about Utkarsh Ambudkar’s character not engaging directly with spirits over the past few episodes has been amusing. But this latest twist, allowing Jay to see the ghosts of his and Sam’s manor, is exhilarating! It’s got me pondering theories on how exactly Jay will acquire this new ability.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but get excited while discussing the upcoming season on the 2024 TV schedule during our recent chat. The panel at San Diego Comic-Con was particularly intriguing, with some major announcements – like the casting of Patience! But what really piqued my interest was Utkarsh Ambudkar’s reveal about Jay’s significant development. In an exclusive interview with TVLine, he let us in on this exciting secret.
We’re eagerly looking forward to discovering the reasons and methods behind Jay’s ability to perceive spirits. This revelation is scheduled for Season 4. At the moment, none of us are aware of how it will unfold, but I can hardly contain my anticipation for those intriguing conversations with my colleagues.
From the very start, there’s been a recurring joke that Sam can perceive spirits while Jay cannot. Although it’s always amusing, they’ve reached the limit of their comedic potential in this area. Therefore, it would be quite refreshing to witness a significant shift. Ambudkar elaborated on his character’s substantial growth, and he playfully mentioned that he can now maintain eye contact with his colleagues.
In our usual routine, we seldom gaze into each other’s eyes. However, that’s about to change, I assure you.
Since I strongly believe that Jay might eventually be capable of perceiving spirits, I’m absolutely thrilled about the recent news. Consequently, I find myself brainstorming various hypotheses concerning his ability to do so.
My Theories About How Jay Will Be Able To See The Ghosts
It appears that there’s just one plausible scenario for humans to perceive ghosts, and we observed this in Sam’s case during Season 1 when she narrowly escaped death and gained the ability to see spirits in her manor. This theory might also apply to Jay, but I believe there could be other explanations as well, so let’s explore different perspectives on the subject.
He Could Almost Die Like Sam
In Season 4, there’s a strong possibility that Jay might come perilously close to death, which could potentially grant him the ability to see spirits.
It seems that other characters have attempted something similar, but with no success. Therefore, I find it unlikely that Ambudkar’s character would deliberately put himself in a life-threatening situation to see them. Instead, I strongly suspect that any such event involving Ambudkar would occur by chance.
Maybe, he’ll fall off a ladder while working on his restaurant. Maybe, he’ll accidentally electrocute himself while fixing the manor. It’s possible that he could just get into some sort of freak accident. All of these would lead to him seeing the ghosts, and I don’t think we should rule it out as a route the show will go down.

It’s important to remember that although Jay finds it difficult to converse with spirits freely, there is one specter he’s had a direct conversation with – Sas. In fact, Sas possesses the ability to enter dreams, and in Season 3, we witnessed him conversing with Jay while in this dream state.
In a single instance, the power was employed, and it’s reasonable to anticipate its continued appearance in Season 4. Given the hint that we could uncover the circumstances surrounding Sas’s demise in forthcoming episodes, this revelation further strengthens this assumption.
It’s quite plausible that these two narratives could intersect given the pre-existing bond between their characters. Perhaps Sas can facilitate the entry of other spirits into dreams, serving as a means for Jay to interact with everyone. Additionally, it’s worth considering that this ability might materialize beyond dreamscapes as well.
Although I’m unsure of the specifics, it seems plausible that Sas’ spectral abilities could play a role in why Jay can perceive spirits during the next season.
Certainly, there are numerous possibilities given the innovative choices they’ve made on Ghosts. Therefore, although my theories might be accurate, I am equally prepared for them to surprise us with an unexpected twist – a moment that I wouldn’t have predicted – allowing Jay to finally establish eye contact with spirits.
