Robert Pattinson’s Former Director Praises His ‘Intimate And Delicate’ Work In The Batman, Then Gets In A Few Digs At The Movie

As a seasoned gamer with decades of immersive storytelling under my belt, I must say that Claire Denis’ perspective on The Batman resonates deeply with me. Her critique of the Hollywood scale and her preference for a more intimate, character-driven narrative aligns perfectly with my own gaming experiences.

2022 saw The Batman receiving widespread acclaim. Many fans admired director Matt Reeves’ gritty and brooding portrayal of the iconic comic book character, as well as the enhanced focus on detective work in the plot. Robert Pattinson’s performance as the Caped Crusader was particularly noteworthy, adding depth to the action-packed blockbuster film. However, it wasn’t universally liked, with a fellow collaborator of Pattinson recently commenting on the movie. Although they appreciated his acting skills and emotional depth, the filmmaker had issues with other aspects of the production.

As a dedicated admirer, I recently got a fascinating glimpse into the artistic mind of Claire Denis during an interview with ScreenSlate at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In this insightful conversation with fellow filmmaker Isaach de Bankolé, she candidly discussed her cinematic journey. Notably, she mentioned that she’s acquainted with Robert Pattinson after collaborating on the critically acclaimed ‘High Life.’

I chose to watch “The Batman” because Robert Pattinson, who portrays Batman, is personally acquainted with me. The film underwent extensive post-production work, involving around 300 people. However, it’s Robert’s unique interpretation of Batman that caught my attention. I admire how he shaped his character, making it intriguing. The movie seems to be a blend of two distinct stories – one being the intimate and subtle Batman narrative, while the other encompasses the special effects, large crowds, and post-production elements, which almost feel like two separate films. If given the opportunity, I’d love to create a Batman story without the additional production aspects.

In comparison to other superhero movies, The Batman stands out for its grounded approach, shying away from typical elements like fantastical powers and science fiction. Instead, it offers a gritty, serious detective story with characters grappling with real-life issues. Yet, despite this, it retains the thrilling elements you’d expect from a big-budget Hollywood film, such as high-speed car chases and spectacular CGI scenes, like the climactic showdown at Madison Square Garden. Some filmmakers focusing on smaller-scale productions might view these large-scale aspects as unnecessary rather than enhancing the overall production.

It’s unconventional to ponder if Claire Denis, known for her traditional filmmaking style and independent productions, might venture into the superhero blockbuster world. Nevertheless, studios like Marvel and DC have a pattern of recruiting indie directors for their projects. Marvel tapped Chloé Zhao to direct Eternals following her success with Nomadland, and DC hired Cathy Yan for Birds of Prey after her Sundance film, Dead Pigs. However, Denis’ unique approach might differ significantly from what DC typically aims for in a Batman project.

Instead of the usual blockbuster or traditional superhero elements in a Batman film, an intriguing alternative could be a detective drama that delves deep into the psychological aspects of a vigilante’s quest for revenge. This hypothetical project might exclude high-octane action scenes like car chases and big set pieces, featuring a compact cast and operating on a reduced budget. It’s debatable whether this more introspective approach would appeal to fans of superhero films, or if they prefer the thrilling adrenaline rushes provided by action-packed movies. However, Matt Reeves has confirmed he will continue as director for The Batman 2, suggesting that a departure from his established style may not be on the horizon anytime soon.
