‘Squid Game’ to End With Season 3, Post-Christmas Return Set at Netflix

As a die-hard fan of Squid Game, I can hardly contain my excitement! The announcement that Season 2 will premiere on Christmas Day and the final season in 2025 is music to my ears (or should I say, eyes since it’s a visual feast). Three years may seem like an eternity, but who needs sleep when there’s Squid Game to keep me awake?

Netflix has set a return date — and also an end date — for Squid Game.

The popular streamer’s most significant series yet is scheduled to release its much anticipated second installment on December 26, the day following Christmas – a period when streaming viewership tends to be exceptionally high. Additionally, Netflix and Squid Game’s executive producer, screenwriter, and director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed plans for a third and concluding season, slated for premiere in 2025.

Approximately three years after the initial release of Squid Game, which was a global phenomenon in 2021, the second season will be available. This Netflix series currently holds the top spot among all series, regardless of language, for both total views (265.2 million) and total watch time (2.2 billion hours), as measured by the number of views divided by running time over its first 13 weeks on air.

In a letter revealing the show’s conclusion, Hwang reveals that Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who swore revenge at the end of season one, reenters the game. The question remains: will he manage to exact his vengeance? It appears that Front Man won’t make it easy for him this time around. As their confrontations escalate, the struggle between their realms will carry on into the final episodes of season three, set to premiere next year.

Apart from Lee, the original cast members for season two include Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo. They will be joined by Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an in the upcoming season.

Netflix offered a sneak peek at Season 2 back in February, showcasing it as part of their preview for upcoming shows. They later announced that the series would air during the latter half of 2024. In the interim between seasons, Netflix also introduced Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition inspired by the drama, which is set to have its own second season as well.

“I’m delighted to witness the idea behind the creation of a new ‘Squid Game’ flourish and ripen as this tale concludes, according to Hwang’s letter. We’ll strive to deliver another exhilarating journey. I hope you’re looking forward to what’s ahead.”

Lee Jung-jae and Hwang Dong-hyuk were each honored with an Emmy for their contributions to the initial season of “Squid Game”. It’s worth noting that Hwang Dong-hyuk serves as an executive producer for the series alongside Kim Ji-yeon.
