Outlander Executive Producer Acknowledges What Fans Have Been Missing In Recent Seasons As Blood Of My Blood Prequel Looms

As a dedicated fan who has been following the captivating journey of the Frasers since their initial arrival in America, I eagerly welcome the upcoming events in the Outlander universe. The return of Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian to Scotland in November of 2024 promises a thrilling continuation of their adventure, and the tantalizing glimpse of the prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, adds an exciting new layer to our anticipation.

The dry spell for the latest “Outlander” series is nearing its end, as Starz has confirmed that the second half of Season 7 will debut in November, wrapping up the 2024 TV schedule. After the midseason finale on August 23, Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian returned to Scotland, and some preview images hint at what awaits them there. However, with several months still remaining, it’s worth discussing the upcoming “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” spin-off series, as executive producer Ronald D. Moore revealed how it could potentially fill the gap for dedicated “Outlander” fans.

Ronald D. Moore has been involved as an executive producer on Outlander since its inception and was credited for the episode “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” which emphasized the parallel love stories of Claire’s parents and Jamie’s parents. The idea for a prequel, set a generation before Claire and Jamie, was announced following the end of Outlander Season 6 in 2022. Mick Joest from TopMob asked Moore when he first realized there was an interest among audiences for a spinoff focusing on events occurring prior to Claire and Jamie’s time. In an interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Moore revealed:

It seems that fans have expressed interest in delving deeper into the background story, given that the author, Diana Gabaldon, has provided extensive backstory in her books. These stories contain rich mythology that appeals to readers, and it’s clear that they crave more. Additionally, viewers have expressed a desire to revisit Scotland and the castle, as the initial season spent a considerable amount of time there, but subsequent seasons have moved away from this location.

When transitioning Diana Gabaldon’s book series from page to screen, certain elements had to be left out for the TV show. Author Vince Gilligan and his team consult with Gabaldon about changes, and she has expressed her appreciation for the show in Season 7. However, there are several aspects of the background and extended stays in Scotland that have been noticeably absent, a concern that Moore acknowledges has caused frustration among some fans. The Frasers’ return to Scotland in the second half of Season 7 may not be a permanent fixture for the remainder of the series, which will conclude after Season 8. Moore further explained this potential departure.

Some part of the audience yearns for the olden times of the Highlands, along with certain characters and mythology associated with them. Therefore, revisiting that era seemed fitting, especially if we’re considering a spinoff series. This time period could effectively rekindle interest in the show among viewers.

Despite Starz confirming that the spinoff of Outlander: Blood of My Blood is set to air in 2025, many questions about the series remain unanswered. For instance, it’s yet to be determined if time travel will factor into the storyline, and whether Claire’s parents might ever encounter the famous standing stones. Since Brianna inherited the ability to time travel from Claire’s side of the family, it seems doubtful that Jamie’s parents will participate in any time-related shenanigans.

Here are the actors who will portray the four main characters in the upcoming series “Blood of My Blood”:

Alternatively, a premiere in 2025 might be December 31, but I’ll keep my hopes high and anticipate the release of Outlander Season 7B on Friday, November 22 instead. You can stream all six previous seasons right now with a Netflix subscription.
