Hannah Waddingham to Narrate BBC Animated Adaptation ‘Tiddler,’ Airing at Christmas

As a lifelong fan of captivating storytelling and heartwarming animations, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming BBC Christmas special, “Tiddler”. Having grown up with the magic of Julia Donaldson’s books and Axel Scheffler’s illustrations, this is like a dream come true.

As a fan of British television, I am thrilled to share my excitement about the upcoming animated special, “Tiddler.” Having grown up watching BBC shows and appreciating their unique storytelling and high-quality production values, I can confidently say that this new project promises to be a treat for both children and adults alike.

The BBC and Magic Light Pictures have transformed a movie based on the top-selling picture book duo from the U.K., Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. This film revolves around a tiny gray fish with an enormous imagination who becomes lost in the vast ocean. However, he manages to find his way back with the help of his own storytelling abilities.

As a fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of an extraordinary ensemble in this upcoming special! I’m honored to be led by the talented Juno Temple (known for her roles in Ted Lasso and Game of Thrones) as our narrator. We also have the hilarious Lolly Adefope (Ghosts, Saltburn) joining us as Miss Skate, Jayde Adams (Ruby Speaking, Alma’s Not Normal) bringing life to Plaice, and the multi-talented Rob Brydon (Gavin and Stacey, The Trip) taking on various roles including Fisherman, Whale, Starfish, and Anchovy. Additionally, child actors Reuben Kirby and Theo Fraser will lend their voices to the title role and Johnny Dory respectively. This promises to be a truly memorable experience for all of us!

The movie can be summarized as an “undersea journey that showcases the strength of imagination, self-assurance, and learning to thrive as a small fish amidst a vast sea.”

Waddingham expressed: “Recording the narrator for this Christmas special from Magic Light Pictures has been a delight. Tiddler, being the story within us all, allows children to grasp the feeling of being a small fish in a vast ocean – an experience we’ve all shared at some point. Over the years, I’ve cherished reading Julia and Axel’s books to my daughter, and it’s heartwarming to now bring one of them to life through this enchanting animation.”

As a gamer immersed in the world of stories and big imaginations, let me say that Julia Donaldson hits the nail on the head with “Tiddler”. This tale resonates deeply with my writer’s heart, and the film brilliantly translates its essence. The casting is phenomenal, but what truly leaves me awestruck are the young child actors who breathe life into this adaptation in a way that’s nothing short of remarkable.

Tiddler is based on a popular picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. This film marks the 12th animated special of their work produced by Magic Light Pictures for the BBC. Last year, an estimated 8.6 million viewers tuned in to watch Tabby McTat.
